From the description, I really could not tell how this was different from the "classic" edition of the book. It seemed the content was the same, but this had "color" illustrations. I was not sure what that would look like. The "classic" version that I already have has fairly crude drawings of maps, and some of the black and white photos were printed with such high contrast, that it was hard to make out the details of the images. This deluxe edition is really much better than the classic version. The paper is much more substantial and the photos are mostly new, and the color and exposure are really quite good. The maps have been updated, and a lot of the photos have been replaced with updated versions. Although it is hard to tell from the photo, this book is about an inch larger in the long axis and about 3/4" longer from side to side. It is also thicker, most likely from the better paper. I have only glanced through to text, and it seems to be mostly about the same (which is fine - this was always a very good reference book). The price difference between the "classic" and the "deluxe" is not prohibitive, and so I would recommend the deluxe version for anyone considering this book. I bought this as a gift, and in the future, would probably only buy the deluxe version.

This is an enormous book, to be absorbed slowly. The beginning explains how this reference book is set up. After a great deal of information on the general history of the Bible it begins with the old testament books. There is a detailed account of what is felt to be 400 years before the new testament begins. At the end there is information on church histories , thoughts on how to use it as a study guide, maps, pictures, a wealth of information. I think my own plan is to read one of the 66 books of the Bible, go back and read the reference chapter on that book. This book is just over one thousand pages and it is likely to take me a year to absorb its information. Beautiful maps, pictures, very impressive. I will warn you it is a big heavy book for serious study. Don't think you can slip it in your pocket or purse. It is textbook in size.

I was gifted my first copy of this book over 40 years ago and it has been my go-to reference when I study the Bible. I tend to read this book concurrently with my Bible reading. I have bought updated versions as they came out, to keep up with new information that was added. The book is a great reference for anyone studying the Bible, and interested in archeology and the history of the Bible. I would be a valuable asset for anyone studying Jewish history too, since almost the first ½ of the book concerns the Old Testament. It helps show that the Bible story is not an abstraction, but is rooted in history and that there are archeological evidence to support the events and places mentioned. It makes the bible more "real". It is a convenient size, so that it could be read in bed, and the typeface and font size are readable. I find it much more useful to look up things in this book when I have a question, vs. heavier tomes, such as Strong's Bible Reference. Some of the "classic" version illustrations were the only weak spot in the book. The older books had line drawn maps, which were difficult to interpret. The photos were all in black and white, and often of such high contrast, that the details were hard to appreciate. Despite these deficiencies, it is still one of the best Bible reference books out there. I saw a "deluxe" version of this book on Amazon, and ordered it along with this one, just to see what the difference would be. The price differential was not prohibitive. I would have to say that the Deluxe version is printed on much better paper, and the illustrations and photos are in color. Many of the images have been updated in the Deluxe version. The textual content appears to be the same, so there are no real changes in the substance of the book, but it does appear to be more visually appealing. It is also a larger book, by about an inch on all sides, and bit thicker. If you are interested in this book, I would recommend that you spend the extra money and get the Deluxe version. Either one will serve you well in your study of the Bible.

I can't believe it took me 20+ years to finally find a bible handbook that's so amazing and perfect and easy-to-read and understandable and fascinating. I could go on and on about this truly valuable book. It answers so many questions myself and my children have about the bible. And the photos are amazing. I love love love love love love this book and will keep it in my household forever.

I have an old Halleys, small, concise and I thought it was just wonderful. I didn't know there was a newer one until I broused Amazon. When I saw it I couldn't wait to buy it. I was amazed at the content and the up to date archeological information this new addition contains. It has made Bible study so much more real, alive, pertinent and in the now.. I cannot read my bible or study a passage without finding the sideline story in Halleysa living picture of the times, places and people.

I had a very old version of this book (all black & white photos) and very small. This is a huge improvement and a real book. Beautiful color photos and a great companion to reading the bible, with so much background information. As if a pastor was guiding you, prior to or even after, reading a book of the bible. Suburb in every way.

I found my 1957 version of Halley's Bible Handbook but noticed that so much had transpired since then that in places, it was so out-of-date. Only thing I don't like is that it is sooo big and it is a bit cumbersome to hold and read for this old lady. But it is certainly more updated in their analysis.

I have an older edition of Halley's Bible Handbook and it doesn't compare to this. I love the maps and all of the color in this handbook. It is much better than the older version I have used for a number of years. The commentary is very easy to understand and helps me to understand passages in the Bible I have questions about. I highly recommend this book as a great addition to anyone's Bible materials. It is a great book to be used with what is already the best book ever written THE HOLY BIBLE.

I bought this book because I was aiming to know more about Japanese cyberpunk, and I have not read through all the essays but the ones I have read are fantastic--informative but not too dense to be readable; I was thrilled to find a measured, academic article about something usually so removed from intelligent analysis as otaku/yaoi subculture. Aside from that, the bibliographies are tremendously informative in themselves, they pointed me to many other good sources (although not all of them are in English). I like this book too for treating with such depth and breadth Japanese science fiction in general, which tends to be reduced to a few popular anime and manga. Overall this is a great (and very welcome) essay collection.

This book does a good job in providing the history of cyberpunk anime/literary works. Like other books that explore posthumanism and cyborgs, this book is good to have in your collection.

The present book is a must-read for those going into the field of research into anime, particularly SF anime, because it's got a lot of detailed and informative articles in it about the genre of anime. However, the first part on prose science fiction is more readable than the part on anime, which is laden with some highly technical and abstruse articles on the technicalities of anime (cinema) studies. Overall, a good read, but only for those at an advanced level of research.

It was a great b

"Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams" is a collection of essays written about Japanese Science Fiction edited by Christopher Bolton, Istvan Csicsery-Ronay Jr., and Takayuki Tatsumi. These essays are split into two sections, the first one is "Prose Science Fiction", and the second section is "Science Fiction Animation". These essays discuss Japanese Science Fiction from its origins (oddly enough in detective fiction) to the anime of today, which has produced some extraordinary innovative storylines. The editors provide an interesting introduction to the book which discusses the organization and provides a good overview. Most of the essays were published elsewhere first. Only Chapter five appears to be original, but that doesn't mean that this book is not worthwhile. The first section of this book covers the written form of Japanese Science Fiction, though the essays don't necessarily fit completely into the categories where they are placed. The first essay is by Miri Nakamura and is titled "Horror and Machines in Prewar Japan: The Mechanical Uncanny in Yumeno Kyusaku's `Dogura Magura'". This is an interesting chapter and provides insight into the use of machines in the fiction of the era. She has a wonderful discussion of how science fiction developed from detective fiction in Japan. This chapter is extremely important in seeing the origins of the genre in Japan, and one can easily see how key themes, such as the man-machine type stories have always played an important role in Japanese Science Fiction.Chapter two is "Has the Empire Sunk Yet? The Pacific in Japanese Science Fiction" by Thomas Schnellbacher. This chapter helps build on the first chapter, and discusses the important theme of identity of the Japanese people in the storylines in Japanese science fiction. This chapter is a good example of how the essays don't really fit into the sections of the book, as it discusses prose, movies, and anime and how this theme has appeared in many important works in all three. The link between this era and the loss of prestige due to the war is significant, and important in the discussion.Chapter three is "Alien Spaces and Alien Bodies in Japanese Women's Science Fiction" by Kotani Mari. This essay includes an interesting discussion on the rise of women's science fiction in Japan and how it differed from the women's movement in the west. Kotani Mari uses the transformation of the physical self as a running theme in this area of science fiction. Discussed are works like Kurimoto Kaoru's "Guin Saaga", Sato Aki's Barutazaaru No Henreki", and Takano Fumio's "Vasurafu".Chapter four is "SF as Hamlet: Science Fiction and Philosophy" by Azuma Hiroki is an unusual choice for this book, as a good portion of this essay is looking at western works both in the SF arena as well as philosophy. However, Azuma Hiroki does bring the discussion back to Japanese science fiction and the shifts which took place in the genre in Japan during that time such as the shift from literature to anime and manga.Chapter five is "Tsutsui Yasutaka and the Multimedia Performance of Authorship" by William O. Gardner. This is my personal favorite of the essays. I found the discussion of the innovative use of multimedia in the telling of a science fiction story to be incredibly interesting. Tsutsui's "Gaspard of the Morning was a newspaper-serialized novel, which incorporating feedback from the readers into the text, altering the story as it went, or so it appeared.Chapter six is "When the Machines Stop: Fantasy, Reality, and Terminal Identity in "neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Serial Experiments: Lain" by Susan J. Napier. This chapter opens the second section of the book on anime, and it is anime which is the focus of the majority of the book, including several examples in the first section. While clearly anime is the dominant form of Japanese science fiction, I would have thought there would have been more to say about the movies and manga as well. Susan Napier takes an in depth look at the anime films mentioned in the title of the essay, and it is interesting to see how they fit in with the themes which have developed over time in the genre.Chapter seven is "The Mecha's Blind Spot: "Patlabor 2" and the Phenomenology of Anime" by Christopher Bolton. This is another outstanding essay. Christopher Bolton clearly knows anime as well as "Patlabor", "Ghost in the Shell", and other works which he takes a deep dive look at some of the techniques used by the creators of these films.Chapter eight is "Words of Alienation, Words of Flight: Loanwords in Science Fiction Anime" by Naoki Chiba and Hiroko Chiba. Yet again, a wonderful look at an entirely different view of techniques used in anime, that is to say the language and what the sub-context is that goes along with the choice of words. Not being someone who speaks Japanese or has been exposed to Japanese culture to any great extent, I am not sure I would ever have picked up on this aspect by watching the anime films, and that makes this chapter one of the best for me personally.Chapter nine is "Sex and the Single Cyborg: Japanese Popular Culture Experiments in Subjectivity" by Sharalyn Orbaugh. This is another good chapter, as it takes a broader look at the subject, including providing references to Star Wars, Frankenstein, etc., which help the reader understand the topic and the comparisons being drawn. Sharalyn Orbaugh also looks at "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Ghost in the Shell" to help illustrate the discussion of sexuality and singularity which are important in these films.Chapter 10 is "Invasion of the Woman Snatchers: The Problem of A-Life and the Uncanny in "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" by Livia Monnet. This essay takes an in depth look at the first fully computer-animated "photorealistic" feature film, and presents the view that it represents a turning point in the industry. It is an interesting discussion, though I am not sure I buy into the premise. The last chapter is titled "Otaku Sexuality" by Saito Tamaki. This chapter looks at a type of fan which is unique to Japan and Japanese Science Fiction, and so it isn't directly about Anime even though it is placed in that section of the book. The otaku are shunned by some Japanese, for some reasons which Saito Tamaki discusses, and also discussed in great detail is the reality behind this group and myths are laid to rest. This is an interesting psychological analysis of a type of Science Fiction fan (though not all otaku are fans of science fiction), but I am not sure it tells us much about the genre any more than a study of types of fans in the U.S. would tell us about American Science Fiction. At the same time, it does provide a different perspective from which to view the genre.Takayuki Tatsumi provides a nice afterword titled "A Very Soft Time Machine: From Translation to Transfiguration" in which he discusses the essays and how they relate as well as his own personal reflections on the subject.Ultimately this is a very good book, and I am rounding up to five stars for the rating. I would have liked to see a few more essays, taking a look at some additional areas, such as manga and the non-anime movies in particular. However, what information is provided is excellent, and it is nice that they were able to bring this series of essays from different sources together in one place.

Jamie Oliver is simply in a league of his own. I love cooking, I come from a very long line of Home Cooks who believe in making food from scratch which is good for your body and your soul, my dad was a chef his entire life, I know a thing or two about making decent food. But I got this cookbook I figured I would find a few recipes out of it that I wanted to try and almost an entire post it booklet later I have marked literally every other page of recipes that I want to try.For me, visual aids are a deal-breaker simply because I want to know that I've achieved the recipe.. every.. single recipe.. in this book has a picture, not just any old picture, beautifully photographed pictures! I find myself just looking at the pictures of the food that he has made, they are just stunning. There are imperfections in cooking and the way that these photographs were taken shows the imperfections which again is part of cooking, cooking is not a perfect art!Jamie Oliver puts a humble, simplistic spin on his dishes. These are not pretentious hard-to-find ingredients that you will scout your city and websites to try to find. The ingredients are easy to find, you can find almost everything in your local grocery store and that's what makes this cookbook so relatable.Additionally Jamie Oliver not only shows you the recipe, he talks about the history behind where the dish originates from, I appreciate that when I sit down to eat dinner with my family and I can share this information with my children, broadening their repertoire of food and culture.I think of all of the cookbooks that I have, and I have some of the top most popular cookbooks on the market this specific one takes the cake.Buy it.

My mom asked for this item for Christmas because she recently went on a cruise that had Jamie Oliver’s restaurant on it. She loved his food and said the one thing she wanted for Christmas was this cookbook. I am a mostly broke college student, so the price was a bit daunting for me since everything, including recipes, is online nowadays and I was seriously wondering if this book would be worth it. However, when it arrived, I was thrilled with how big it is! It is very high quality, very thick, and hardcover. I looked through the book with my mom and was thrilled to see British classics from my childhood such as beans on toast and toad in a hole, but more sophisticated. There are tons of recipes in this book, including drinks. I think it is definitely worth the price!

Always been a fan of Jamie Oliver and his cooking style - we have about 6 of his cookbooks and enjoy cooking the recipes over and over again. In this new book, the recipes are just as tasty and a bit more complex for the budding cook amongst you. My only real issue is that the measurements, and instructions, are off slightly and don't always produce the results you are looking for (or promised). That is the reason for the 4 stars, rather than 5.

This is my kind of comfort food! Not your usual mac 'n cheese, and 20 ways to make stodge. These are unusual, diverse and delicious. The beautiful pictures inspire me to want to cook more, and the helpful information (such as calories per serving, time to make, number of servings) make me feel in control, although the recipes aren't that difficult to make.I just love the introductions at the start of each recipe, his enthusiasm is contagious. This has got to be my favorite Jamie Oliver cookbook!

All my faves and lots more. Probably NOT a healthy book though :-) I was happy to find that the recipes were already converted to American measurements.

One of my best cooking books

Jamie Oliver is one of our favorite chefs and this cookbook does not disappoint. Not for the diet-oriented (although a few of the recipes are healthy), this is a must have for winter recipes that satisfy.

The only bad part of this book is trying to stay skinny if you leave it lying around. Yum, yum, yum.

Amazon.com Review

Winner of the Longman History Today Prize in 1998, Amanda Vickery's The Gentleman's Daughter: Women's Lives in Georgian England is an outstanding study of a crucial period in modern women's history. Roy Porter described this book as "the most important thing in English feminist history in the last ten years." Readers familiar with the feminist analysis of women's lives in the late 18th to mid-19th century will find some of the commonplaces of that viewpoint called into question: the rise of "separate spheres" of male and female experience, for example, or the social construction of motherhood in the 18th century. At once scholarly and readable, The Gentleman's Daughter takes its readers on a vivid and well-illustrated tour of "genteel" Georgian society, bringing that world to life through what Vickery identifies as the "terms set out in their own letters by genteel women." Those terms structure the seven sections of the book: "Gentility", "Love and Duty', "Fortitude and Resignation" (which includes a notable discussion of the experience of pregnancy), "Prudent Economy", "Elegance", "Civility and Vulgarity", and "Propriety". "Our battles were not necessarily theirs," Vickery reminds us, striking her convincing balance between a feminist interest in the restriction and rebellion of women's lives and their own ways of finding meaning and pleasure in the gender distinctions of Georgian culture. --Vicky Lebeau, Amazon.co.uk

From Library Journal

This meticulously researched social history should be welcomed by specialists in British and European women's history. Vickery (British women's history, Univ. of London) challenges the standard argument that once the industrial revolution took production out of the home, women's lives were marginalized in the domestic sphere. Using the letters, diaries, and account books of more than 100 women from the "genteel" classes, she theorizes that women's activities actually expanded as they involved themselves in new areas of community life. Indeed, she concludes that the struggles of the Victorian suffragettes may have stemmed not from a sense of oppression but from a desire to expand the gains of their Georgian predecessors. Unfortunately, Vickery's insistence on proving her provocative thesis overwhelms the richness of the descriptive material she presents: there is good information here on household management, servants, material culture, shopping and consumption, and female attitudes on courtship, pregnancy, motherhood, and child rearing. Recommended for academic libraries.?Marie Marmo Mullaney, Caldwell Coll., Livingston, NJCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Based on other reviews, I had great expectations for this book, and as a professional historian, I can certainly validate the value and significance of the work. Effectively, this book takes earlier research work and applies it to a small group of people to show how some of the general ideas were borne out. But, and I admit this may be a personal failing, it winds up being so focussed on just a few families that it can be hard to stay interested. As a micro-history it is excellent, but for my own personal interest, I would have liked to see how these micro-histories might imply something for the larger region, too.

This book reminds me of reading someone's doctoral dissertation--but that isn't meant to be an insult, just a comment on the writing style (academic). We are introduced to real women and their real situations by way of their letters and diaries. It is full of very interesting stories of a few related women in 18th century England. My only wish would be that the book could have been written to include women from other areas in England--really just more women in general. I appreciate the author's work in this under-researched area and hope it inspires more research in the future.I have long wished that I could have lived in Jane Austen's world (with epidurals). But after reading this I realize that I would rather keep my appliances and modern medicine and my legal rights. I appreciated this book because it broke me of my misconceptions about any kind of "romantic" life of the women of this "almost leisure" class, as another reviewer called it. They were at the mercy of their husbands, their social situation and fate. Very thought provoking for a Jane Austen fan like myself.

This book is gorgeously written. Ms. Vickery has a beautiful turn of phrase - exhaustively researched and an utter delight to read. Highest possible points go to the author. As other reviewers have commented upon, however, the print quality is not of the highest. The binding has cracked and the pages have come apart in the new copy I purchased, despite taking the usual care of a book when I am reading. I would absolutely read all of Amanda Vickery's work, but would be wary of another by this particular publishing house, which of course is very surprising given the fact that it is published by Yale University Press. They need to rethink their printing partner methinks!

Amanda Vickery's book is about the life of genteel (note that genteel does not equal aristocratic) women in the 18th and early part of the 19th century. It is divided into seven chapters that roughly coincide with major events and duties in a lady's life (courtship, marriage, motherhood, householding, shopping and entertainment). Vickery's thesis is that women were not marginalized in society during the 18th century, and did not operate in separate spheres leading up to the Victorian era. (She does not touch the Victorian era at all.) She proves this point well by sharing anecdotes from letters and books, newspapers and prints. But the book is also littered with jewels of information about all aspects of female life.My favorite chapter was that on childbirth and motherhood. There is a really fascinating excerpt on how midwives were slowly replaced by "male midwives," and then by physicians. "Ladies of quality" in the 18th and 19th centuries are given the short end of the stick as mothers. The belief persists that they were rarely invested in their children's lives; this is based mainly on the fact that many did not breast feed and apparently were too busy leading very busy lives to bother with their children. (If that is the criteria, then God only knows how mothers today would rate.) Vickery proves this completely wrong, which is gratifying, to say the least.Vickery's book can be slow-going at times due to the large number of citations that she makes in it, but that is the nature of an academic work. It is also full of interesting tidbits; for example, there was a ladies' debating society in the late 1700s which, among other things, debated whether a woman pledging obedience to her husband in her wedding vows required her to always follow his orders. It is definitely more in-depth in its material than many other books, so if you enjoy delving into history, this is for you.

Unbelievable - I paid $18 for the kindle version and it doesn't include any photos? Just blank spaces stating that I should refer to the print version. What BS.

I spent many hours gleaning many tiny facts, figures and impressions of the Georgian era. One of my favorites periods in time, I ran out of fiction books (that were not fantastical) to read. I'll read this several times as there is a great deal of information.

Excellent condition, fast shipping!! However, book was a chore to complete. Overly wordy and extremely mundane.

There are no illustrations in the Kindle edition. The text often refers to the illustrations, and there is page after page with a message that due to copyright etc, the illustration is not there. It quickly gets extremely annoying, to the point where I gave up reading. Sad, because the text is interesting and well written.

I enjoy learning about early civilizations and cultures not so well known, and Michael D. Coe provides a revealing narrative about the Olmecs, the oldest known civilization in the New World, “America's First Civilization”. Coe is one of the foremost Mayanist scholars of the twentieth century. The Olmec civilization lived in the hot, wet, tropical wetlands of Veracruz and Tabasco in Southern Mexico between 1500 and 400 BC and were “the first true native peoples to achieve a high level of social, cultural, and artistic intricacy”. They are regarded as the first civilization to develop in Mesoamerica and the Olmec heartland is one of the six cradles of civilization worldwide. The Olmec’s place in the world is shedding new information about how the Indians of the Americas came to exist. The Olmec were the first in the Americas to develop a sophisticated style of stone sculpture, in particular colossal heads that weighed up to 15 tons first discovered in the 1860s and are said to depict Olmec rulers. They also developed a writing style, with examples of script have been found on roller stamps and stone artifacts, and hieroglyphs dating to around 650 BC. There are seventeen confirmed heads in the Olmec heartland.Coe writes from firsthand knowledge—he excavated their capital at San Lorenzo—and the difficulties he faced including native peoples who were in no mood to have outsiders snooping about their domain, millions of ticks, snakes and other assorted vermin that thrive in the hot, wet southern terrain of Mexico. He also writes about Matthew and Marion who began excavating La Venta in the late 1930s and their work is considered “the most magnificent Olmec site ever dug, for it is the key to Olmec culture.” In fact, their work revealed that the Olmec culture was older than Mayan culture. This is a fascinating book and I highly recommend it.

This is not a book one is likely to snuggle up with while enjoying their favorite libation. It is however fascinating if at times dry and only of interest for a few who may ponder our past. It certainly leaves one questioning “how’d they do that”? Numerous monuments throughout history remain unexplained, or at least guessed at and maybe you buy it maybe not. Stonehenge, Easter Island, the Pyramids in Egypt. But in our own hemisphere there are also wonders to discover. The Olmecs appeared around 3,000 years ago, or 1,000 years BCE. They were indeed civilized albeit primitive. Seems like an oxymoron, but consider. They mined 18 ton stones, transported them some 60 miles and carved giant heads as monuments to some unknown. They dug holes approximately 20 feet deep, about 20 feet square, lined the bottom with carved slabs and then covered the same with the dirt they had removed. They built a pyramid 100 feet high with layers of different colored clay, the source of which is unknown. They were big on jade carvings. Essentially, they selectively bred crops to establish an agricultural food source. Yet no one knows from where they came. It may be assumed as they died out the Mayas, the Aztecs, the Incas, and some other advanced peoples came to be. While much of history seems to focus on early Europe, the Mideast and Asia, there is much to ponder about the history here in the Americas. A book that will leave you if not in awe at least wondering.

Read it on my Kindle. It is recent and up to date with coverage of the dynamically increasing understand of who the Olmec were and how influential they were. Michael D. Coe, author of The Maya (9 editions) and of other works on Meso-American is the widower of Sophie Dobshansky Coe whose translation of Yuriy Valentinovich Knorozov's Writings of the Maya Indians was to aid Michael Coe and others with decoding the Maya hieroglyphic system. This is not covered in the book under review, but leads to it. It covers much the same as Richard Diehl's The Olmecs which is dedicated to Sophie and Michael Coe. Diehl's Olmecs has more pictures and charts in it than does Coe's Kindle version. Both cover much the same ground. Both are very readable and excellent for those seeking to know about the first civilization of the Americas.

This book was an easy read that gives a decent overview of the Olmec civilization. Many facts are lacking which necessitates their substitution with supposition which leaves an incomplete picture. Yet, the author offers logical probabilities which helps to piece together a larger view of history. Illustrations would have been nice but yet, I highly recommend this work for those curious about the roots of mankind.

In addition to a modest amount of information on the Olmecs--about enough for a 15-page journal article--this book provides lots of information on the history of the archeology of Mexican sites and especially the author's digs. The information is presented so haphazardly (and with so few maps) that it is hard (even using Google Maps) to create a coherent understanding of the subject.

Dr. Coe gives a clear, concise and beautifully written history of the Olmec civilization encompassing an area from both coasts of southern Mexico to northern Costa Rica. I gave it four stars because Beliz was twice referred to as British Honduras and I twice checked the copyright which is 2016.Coe also relates the Olmec influence in the classic cultures of not just the Maya, but also Teotehuacan, Zapoteca, Tolteca and Huasteca cultures. He also talks about oral history and farming, fishing and other current daily practices in isolated areas that show how the Olmec civilization began.Nevertheless it's a wonderful readable book for anyone who enjoys American history. I loved the descriptions of the statues, petroglyphs and other art so much that I looked up many of them.

It was a marvel how a culture so long before the better-known Mayans arose, seemingly from nowhere. Yet this volume puts forward some compelling reasons why it happened. Scholarship about Pre-Columbian America has really been enriched in the last decade, and For makes good use of it.

A colleague of mine sent me a link to a BBC article regarding this book several weeks ago. As an patented inventor and product designer I was very intrigued by the title. This is the first book I have read by this author. As I read through its pages, I found Matthew Syed's writing style to be captivating enough to keep my attention while describing events and facts which could otherwise be very dry. For that reason, I am compelled to read his other works, but merely based on the content, I have already recommended this book to dozens of people. The concept of learning from mistakes is as old as recorded history. However, if you think that is what this book is about, think again. There are many nuances to the subject matter disclosed which can be very thought provoking and enlightening. On several occasions I actually put the book down, feeling compelled to rethink dozens of situations in my own life where I have made mistakes, not learned from them and ended up repeating them, stuck in closed loop logic. My key takeaway from reading this book is that Mr. Syed identifies a well-known flaw in humanity to which some critics at first blush might yawn and say “so what, nothing new here” Failure analysis has been around for centuries. Not exactly… this book covers a lot of ground. The Black Box failure analysis model has only been in use for a very limited amount of time in human history, yielding incredible results in aviation safety used for the benefit of all humanity. Yes, individuals throughout history have used versions of failure analysis to solve issues, either for themselves or for small scale issues. But this recent model transcends others in that it truly eliminates the need or benefit of lying, omitting information or tampering with evidence. By doing so, you only perpetuate a problem which could eventually end up costing you your life or the life of your loved ones. I spoke my friend who is a pilot and Lt. Col in the US Air Force about claims in this book and he confirmed the legitimacy and efficacy of the program, stating that US Military standards are slightly different than commercial aviation, but no doubt that you are immune to prosecution and encouraged to fully disclose information, which is solely used to improve safety for not only for the military, but for the greater good of all mankind. In my mind, that is what makes it unique. If you were to tell a pilot in 1935 that in 2015, more pilgrims would die traveling on foot to Mecca (or being politically correct, Hajj 2015), then 3 billion passengers on commercial airplanes, travelling at 575 mph, taking off and landing in everything from thunderstorms and dense fog to snow, ice and gale force winds, sometimes even banking between skyscrapers on approach, they would have looked at you as though you were insane and told you to seek immediate psychological help. But those are the facts, made possible by human beings working together using this system and for the greater good of all.

How should you open your book on failure? Matthew Syed felt on should examine two heart-wrenching stories with similar initial outcomes yet with vastly different responses. A healthy 37-year-old wife and mother of two goes in for a seemingly routine surgery and a typical flight from New York City, NY to Portland, OR. Both cases go, at least to those in charge during the events, inexplicably wrong incredibly fast. The mother dies and the plane crashes; but it is not what happened during these events that matters most according to Syed, it is what happens after. How you respond to those mistakes and learn from them, or don’t can be the difference between future success and failure. Syed chose these two cases for several reasons most notably the divergent responses to their failure. Aviation has pioneered the process of learning from failures and healthcare failures are not typically examined willingly. A “black box,” which is actually orange for those that don’t know, is usually placed in the cockpit and tail of a plane. They monitor every input into the computers onboard, track the conversation between pilot, co-pilot and engineer, and monitor every aspect of flying the plane. These boxes are near indestructible and they are orange because aviators want to find them after the worst thing possible happens, a crash. The information contained within these boxes are scoured over after a crash and researchers glean whatever inputs they are able, so the causes of the crash can be prevented in the future. The industry learns from their mistakes so that they won’t happen again.Healthcare may not be the complete antithesis of Aviation, but it’s close. Doctors react to complications as “a one-off,” “it is just one of those things that can happen,” or “we did the very best we could, but it just didn’t work out.” Mistakes are covered up and not learned from. It is what Syed calls a “closed-loop.” In closed-loops there is no feedback given and thus improvements are not made. According to Syed we should avoid closed-loop situations at all costs. In Black Box Thinking: Why Most People Never Learn From their Mistakes—but Some Do Syed dissects why some companies, individuals, or industries succeed and why others fail. Syed weaves the central theme throughout each chapter with topics ranging from how the Scared Straight system actually created more future criminals than prevented, what caused one UK coach to break the Tour de France curse for British cyclists, or how David Beckham became world class at free kicks. Syed analyzes the psychology behind our fear of admitting mistakes and shows the reader why this is such a bad thing. He then demonstrates how successful companies and individuals are built on failures, more importantly learning from the failures they make. While the theme is almost overbearingly present in each chapter, Syed’s case is made within the first two chapters. The storytelling is captive and enjoyable, however reading felt as if you were being nagged by your mother about eating your vegetables. You know you should, but you’ve heard it a dozen times before. By the end of this book that is how you will feel about learning from failures. It is important, you should learn how to do so, but you’ve heard it a dozen times already. Black Box is an enjoyable read with interesting stories and people, but you won’t come away with a how-to on learning from your mistakes. You’ll just know you should.

Learning from mistakes is a valuable discipline. But it is rarely executed. The book deals with the process of dealing with mistakes. The book uses the idea of a black box that is normally found within an airplane. After there is a crash, this black box has recorded the details leading up to the destruction of the plane. Often these boxes are indestructible. The book does an excellent job of detailing the common mistakes and the normal process that occurs when mistakes are made by people. These mistakes can be fixed, but often people have an avoidance culture. Instead of admitting the mistake, the person seeks to cover up, reinterpret the details, and use avoidance language. All of these responses causes the mistake to continue. The book is an excellent read, though, for my American friends, the book is written in the King's language of Canadian spellings for some of the words. This might catch you off guard, but overall, will not effect you. The book is good for congregational leaders, because we all can make mistakes, and learning from them causes us to improve in the future, but reinterpreting them will cause hurt and fault in the congregation. Sometimes the stories seem to be retold from other sources, so some of the material might seem to be a replete from something you have read from the past, but overall, this is found in only a few spots. This is really a good book, and one that will teach you much about the process of failure and discovery.

I put off reading this because I thought the failure thing had been done to death. But I am soooo glad I read. Syed is a good writer and the subject material is interesting. Life is trial and error - read this book based on my recommendation and if you don't enjoy all is not lost, you've still learned to never trust one of my reviews again.

Review

"Any recent college grad mired in a quarter-life crisis or merely dazed by the freedom of post-collegiate existence should consider it required reading."―Slate.com, Staff Pick"Meg Jay takes the specific complaints of twenty something life and puts them to diagnostic use."―New Yorker"The professional and personal angst of directionless twentysomethings is given a voice and some sober counsel in this engaging guide. While Jay maintains that facing difficulties in one's 20s 'is a jarring--but efficient and often necessary--way to grow,' the author is sincere and sympathetic, making this well-researched mix of generational sociology, psychotherapy, career counseling, and relationship advice a practical treatise for a much-maligned demographic."―Publishers Weekly "A clinical psychologist issues a four-alarm call for the 50 million 20-somethings in America.... A cogent argument for growing up and a handy guidebook on how to get there."―Kirkus Reviews"Excellently written, this book is sensitive to the emotional life of twentysomethings."―Library Journal "THE DEFINING DECADE [is] just the wake up call many twentysomethings need."―The Coffin Factory "I strongly recommend THE DEFINING DECADE for anyone in their 20s trying to figure out their life's direction. You'll learn how to search productively, how to avoid being indulgent, and how to turn good opportunities into great ones."―Po Bronson, author of What Should I Do With My Life?, co-author of Nurtureshock"Before reading THE DEFINING DECADE I didn't know enough about the importance of our twenties to be concerned that I could mess it all up. Now that I do, I could worry myself into paralysis, or, as Meg Jay suggests, grab life by the helm--even if I still have no idea in hell where I'm going. Without a doubt, The Defining Decade will leave you eager to embark on what I now see can be the most exciting odyssey of one's life."―Rachel Kauder Nalebuff, editor of My Little Red Book"THE DEFINING DECADE is the book twentysomethings have been waiting for. It will not tell you what you should do with your life, but it will inspire, motivate, and educate you to figure it out."―Rachel Simmons, author of The Good Girl"THE DEFINING DECADE is eye-opening, important, and a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it."―Wendy Mogel, author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B Minus

Amazing. I wish I could force everyone I personally know (in their twenties or even early thirties) to read this. Get it, read it. Just do it.As a 28 year old this book would have been even more helpful to me 5+ years ago, but alas, such is life. And perhaps as someone a bit older this book is helpful to me in other ways, as I can recognize a lot of things in hindsight. So yes, I think that anyone 17-32 can benefit from this to some degree or another. This book has provided a lot of perspective for me on some of the mistakes I probably could have avoided with love + work, but it's also helped to pin point those mistakes, learn from them, and use it as fuel to move forward in the best way possible. This isn't some spiritual "chicken soup for the soul" book - in fact Meg pushes pretty hard for young people to AVOID those sentiments and not get caught up in the emotional traps that a lot of young adults these days are vulnerable to (from TV, movies, their friends, own parents, etc.)She wants twentysomethings to ask themselves the real tough questions about relationships, jobs, money, education: and then answer them honestly. It's actually all really practical, well thought out advice from a highly skilled therapist/professional in the field. You don't have to relate or even agree with EVERY thing she says, but nonetheless Meg provides perspective that everyone can identify with on some level. The writing is great, too; she does not talk down, come off as condescending, or dismiss anyones concerns: she really gets on the same level as young adults who are struggling.Thank you for this book, Meg.

Best book on preventing the loss of a meaningful life your twenty's. Read it in a day, agreed with the powerful stories and strategies laid out by Dr. Meg Jay to prevent the quarter-life crisis that so many college educated people find themselves trapped in after graduation. Great stories.I've given away a case of these books, and every single person receiving it said it was exactly what they needed to guide them in making major decisions toward a better life. (Many of the twenty-somethings I gave the book to said they HATE to read... which doesn't apply when given the secrets to solving the overwhelming anxiety that comes to those stuck in their twenty's or the caregivers of those who are trapped there).

I read Dr. Meg Jay's NY Times piece on co-habituation (...) which lead me to ordering her book. I received it yesterday and read it in one sitting. So, I think it's pretty good.As a twenty something, I would recommend this book to my friends and even those still in high school. Dr. Jay teaches lessons about how to ideally approach one's twenties and why it really matters. She interweaves research, stories, and counseling sessions with her patients to make a thought provoking but easy book to read. In many of those patients, I saw my friends or myself. There was the twenty something coffee barista still waiting for the right opportunity to come by. There was the beautiful and successful, girl chronically hooking up and never dating because she's still plagued with teenager, self-image problems. There was the bicycle shop guy wanting to be original and afraid of settling down. What they all have in common is this intense desire to know, "Am I going to make it? And what the hell should I be doing in my twenties? School was so easy, but life is so hard."This book isn't a step by step guide. It won't go into how to systematically meet guys/girls, get over depression, or how to do well on an interview. There are plenty of books on getting into the details. Instead, this is a thought provoking book aimed against the popular twenty something zeitgeist today that, "we can do anything", "there's always time", and "I have until 30 to get my life together." Not to mention the million other stories we tell ourselves like, "I'm never going to get good at this", "It's better to wait rather than choose", or "Everyone on Facebook is doing better than me." In a sense, this book is like "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" to personal finance. They are paradigm shifting books that sweep away the false assumptions and beliefs we acquired from our childhood and culture and replace them with solid, real principles on how reality works. This book isn't going to do the heavy lifting for you, only you can do that. This book is the starting point to begin living one's twenties with drive, clarity, and purpose. The book itself is divided into three sections: Work, Love, and The Brain and the Body.Work talks about increasing your identity capital, the value of "weak ties", that you know what you want even though you think you don't, the unhelpful prevalence of Facebook comparisons, and seeing a career as the first step in a unique, customized life versus settling down.Love goes into the importance of taking dating seriously in your 20s, compatibility with possible in-laws, how to make sure "living together" isn't harmful, and choosing the right partner. The Brain and Body is sort of a misc. collection of pieces centered on how your brain, body, and mind works. The Brain and Body section also covered a lot of neuroscience research I wasn't aware of. For example, your brain undergoes a radical period of reconfiguration in your 20s which means now is the best opportunity for learning skills. Or, the frontal cortex that controls a lot of our mature responses such as regulating emotions is still developing for most people in their 20s. Besides the physical brain, Dr. Jay also talks about the mind such as learning how to calm yourself down, how to develop confidence (rather than believing it's fixed), and that you can radically alter how you feel by changing parts of your life.It also has a very frank chapter on fertility and that ladies don't have as much time as they think to have children. The final chapter before the epilogue talks about mapping your years to see how limited your time truly is. It seems common for many young people to talk about getting their career in order or going to graduate school eventually, getting married, and having kids but not all at the same time. Except, when you're 25 or 27 saying this, you're quickly running out of time. It's hard to convey in a review how good the book is. This is the book I wish I could have written in ten years. Not just because of the advice, but because of the patient interviews. I found myself agreeing and sharing the same POV as the patient many times but through the counseling session, it was almost like I was sitting there and seeing my own assumptions fall apart and seeing the truth for what it really is. This book doesn't knock you over the head with what Dr. Jay thinks is right but begins from where you already are and lets you see for yourself the problems in your logic. Just as any good psychologist does. This isn't your run of the mill advice book. There's a lot of popular myths and assumptions that this book dispels with cold, hard truth. I'm a self-help addict, and there was plenty of new information I never heard or thought of before. The underlying message in all the stories and chapters is start living your life now. Take responsibility. Don't believe the lies that your twenties don't matter or that confidence is only innate. For most people, the late night parties, pointless jobs, and random hookups won't be what build your identity, what you care about or remember in the future. If anything, as Billy in the book says, you will probably feel betrayed that you wasted the best years of your life doing all the meaningless things that culture and others mislead you to believe most important. So, start preparing now because the investments (or lack thereof) that you do in your twenties will have the greatest impact in your career, marriage, and overall happiness. As she ends the book, "The future isn't written in the stars. There are no guarantees. So claim your adulthood. Be intentional. Get to work. Pick your family. Do the math. Make your own certainty. Don't be defined by what you didn't know or didn't do. You are deciding your life right now."

I found this book very helpful. I think anyone in their twenties who don't know what they should do with their life should read this book.Dr. Jay does not say that young people in their twenties who don't have a steady job are doing it wrong, or that thinking about a career or love later in life is a bad thing. She merely states (accurately) that all our actions have consequences and if you want a career and children in your thirties that you should start thinking and planning those things in your twenties. She says that your years post-graduation matter and that the executives and experienced professionals in the workplace got there by having years of work behind them. You don't turn thirty and become an experienced professional by magic, it takes work. She also offers solid concrete wisdom on dating, marriage, finding a job, health, hobbies, and the rest. I found her approach not off-putting but motivating. Overall a very useful book.
