My 7 year old daughter doesn't even like pirates but she couldn't put this book down. My six year old son refused to sit through the stories because they were too scary for him. There is killing, death, suspense which may be too much for more sensitive children.
Words and plot line a little confusing for the 7 yr old grandchild but he struggled through it. I purchased 2 copies and we read it on Skype - he does one page and I the next page while he follows along. Switched over to Tom Sawyer and the words and plot were more to his capacities. He even kept reading more than one page as his understanding of the story was easier. He often would read more than one page without stopping for my turn. Follow up questions checking comprehension improved.
We've added many of the classical books to our homeschool library and although the kids haven't read through them all yet I can say they are excited about every title and colorful cover. They are very well made. Nice old fashioned real books!! We can't wait to compare our readings to any old movie versions we can find. I feel this was a great decision!
This is absolutely perfect for a child that has just started reading more complicated books than "baby books". Of all the x-mas gifts he got, this was one of the biggest hits with my grandson (9 years old). His father reads one page and then my grandson reads a page -

Great book
Bought this book for my 6.5 year old son. I had been encouraging him to read by saying that some day he could read treasure island. While this book is a little too advanced for him, he loved the story. I anticipate he will try to read it on his own this summer.Note, this is note the original but an adapted version for young readers. Same story, simpler and shorter text.
