I have retired from public life, and am now become a law student, and of necessity a pro se litigant or litigation adviser to others at no charge. My handbook for pro se litigants requires two books - The Holy Bible, and Blackstone's Commentaries. Proper study of these two books, and the most recent Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, will equip one with the equivalent of a Harvard education of 1850, and you will not be disadvantaged in any courtroom proceeding. For extra credit, or just plain entertainment, listen to George Gordon's Hour of Power, and get an edge.I have not previously encountered such a book as this one. Presenting your story to the jury has been quite simply a learn-as-you-go process. You may practice for thirty-eight years and never encounter a jury. You may encounter a jury every week for thirty-eight years, and if you are fortunate you may learn what you are able to read in this book in four hours. In thirty-eight years, you will have thirty-eight years invested, and your clients will have several hundred dollars invested. And as they say, one learns more from losing than winning.If you are a pro se litigant, read this book. It is now Book Three in my syllabus. If you are a professional attorney already, don't waste your time. You have many important things to do today. I hope we meet up in court sometime.

Condensing years of experience into entertaining and understandable anecdotes is a nearly impossible task; however, Tom Melsheimer and Judge Craig Smith were able to do just that. They have seen it all when it comes to jury trials. Not only have they mastered the procedural elements, but they have mastered the key ingredients for helping us all present our thoughts and arguments in the most effective way possible (in ways that are also helpful to non-lawyers). For years, they worked tirelessly on this book – swapping war stories, reviewing transcripts, and putting pen to paper on some of the concepts they spent their entire career perfecting. The authors have done a fabulous job of sharing their decades of experience and knowledge in an easy to read book. Whether you have been practicing for 35 years like me, or are a second-year law student like my son, this book is a MUST HAVE for a trial lawyer. It covers the basics, but then adds insight and invaluable tips from two top lawyers who have spent their careers in the trenches. Lawyers spend hundreds of dollars to attend CLE programs for a fraction of the useful information contained in this book. If you want real continuing legal education, read this book.

One of the most practical trial books I have ever read. As a Civil Trial specialist certified in Civil Trial Law by the Board of Legal Specialization, I have not read a book before that dissects trial transcripts and identifies both good and bad practice tips on real lawyer examples like this book does. As a managing partner of my firm I have bought this for all my trial attorneys and highly recommend any civil trial practitioner (no matter what the experience) to read!

Salient advice. Easy to digest. Excellent read. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to increase their efficiency and effectiveness in the courtroom (which should be everyone, right?). The authors' use of real trial transcripts to drive home techniques really sets this book apart. Also a fun read for anyone who's simply curious about what the courtroom is really like.

This book is a thorough, yet easily digestible, guideline that can and should be used by law students, practitioners, professors, or anyone else looking to learn the best practices when advocating during a jury trial. This book is unique in that it details the perspective of not only the trial attorney, but also the perspective of a judge.

Thomas Melsheimer and Judge Craig Smith have written the definitive book on the jury trial. This book is a must-read for any aspiring litigator. The authors distill their two lifetimes of legal experience in a condense, easy-to-read format. I especially benefited from the chapter entitled "Judge's Viewpoint."
