The lecturer in this CD is the author of a very, if not the most, widely used casebook: Securities Regulation: Cases and Materials on this subject.My professor used this casebook and I found it to be a very useful study aid. I was able to filter out and understand important ideas from the casebook after listening to the CDs.I found the organization of the CDs to be helpful. The contents are cut into very small units, and some units have only a minute or two. Instead of having to listen to a full hour of lecture to find out specific information on one area, one can simply listen to the particular tracks.West did not put the title of each unit on the tracks. So you see Track 1, Track 2, etc., when you put the CDs in your player. The trick is to look at the back of the package - each bullet represents a track.The CDs contain 6.7 hours of lecture. On one hand, it covered the basic ideas from a broad spectrum fairly well. On the other hand, your professor may go into detail in a particular area, and the CDs become insufficient.In the latter case, I found E&E Securities Regulation: Examples & Explanations to be very useful. The examples are illustrative. The easy-to-read text provides in-depth explanation - much easier to read than Cox's casebook.I recommend this product with the use of E&E.
This is a very good resource. It provides an excellent overview but you depending on your professor it may not go into sufficient depth in some areas. That said, it did go into several areas not covered in my course.
First of all, let's cut to the chase. If you are in law school and had no clue what was going on in class, you should definitely buy this product. My issue is with the outline they provide you. It was about as complete as a 10 page book with 7 of the pages ripped out. If you have an amazing lecture like this, why can't we have an outline that has all the information we need already typed out for us? We certainly pay enough for it. I can't tell you how many times listening to Cox, where I was extremely confused, then consulted the outline, only to realize I am even more confused. This was extremely frustrating, and I really think Sum and Substance could up their product a little better here.Also, the mp3 version should be uploaded onto the internet stores. I couldn't even find a CD player, and had to borrow my friend's old laptop to play them. Sum and Substance, get with the times!
James Cox is obviously a great teacher because his lectures are always packed full of information yet enjoyable. I have his Corporations lecture and it is just as good. Mr. Cox is able to discuss a complicated topic very easily, referring the listener to various parts of the Act without confusing the listener. In short, I would highly recommend this product to any attorney like me who would like to gain a solid grounding in a difficult topic. It has been too long since I was in law school, so I can't speak to its applicability to a securities regulation course. I would think it would be invaluable, though, to any student as well.
Honestly this product is effing amazing. I was taking the course pass fail and rarely if ever attended class and did absolutely none of the assigned reading. I pulled an all-nighter before the exam listened to Sum and Substance and speeded through the E&E and got an A-, kind of makes me feel bad for all the gunners that actually tried.
