I've been in the Naval Engineering field for fifty years and I love reading anything about it. This book is one of my favorites. Although steam propulsion for the most part is out, reading about it is still exciting and interesting. All chapters in this book are easy to understand, knowledgeable and worth learning about. As an after thought I want to add this: I'm the Chief Electrician on the USS Hornet (CVS-12) Museum. So much of this book's material can be applied to the Hornet that I bought a copy for the Docent Chief Engineer so he could study up and add knowledge to his engineering tours. I keep this book on my breakfast table and refer to it regularly. The chapter on Nuclear Propulsion is superb. The whole book is outstanding.

When it comes to Naval, or even civilian/land engineering systems and process primers this book is one of the best I've seen. I'm not talking about all that squishy HR/Management stuff. I'm talking about your hard core physical science stuff! Want to learn how air conditioning works? It's in there. Engines and motors? Yep. Steam cycle? Covered. Electricity? It's there from Ohm's law onward. The electrical section is the only section I thought could have been a tad bit better. They use the original formula and there's an easier, more memorable way for non-electricians to remember it, but the basics are still there.I can't think of any engineering/practical physical science book I've ever seen that explained things better in fewer words. And for the science-challenged, there are clear illustrations and pictures! I bought three of these for my young adult kids, and they love 'em!

Relevant text for entry level engineering department mariners aboard all class and service of working vessels. Much more practical for the engine room sailor than Principles of Naval Engineering which focuses almost exclusively on the formulaic laws of the various processes aboard naval vessels. A wise captain once said, "there's two kinds of sailors; engineers and everybody else!" Indeed.

Great book to cover lots of topics in naval engineering. Those working with steam plants will find this to be helpful primer on the steam cycle and equipment associated to the boiler. Not too technical a book but gives a sailor a great starting off point to understand the systems on various platforms.
