Jamie Oliver is simply in a league of his own. I love cooking, I come from a very long line of Home Cooks who believe in making food from scratch which is good for your body and your soul, my dad was a chef his entire life, I know a thing or two about making decent food. But I got this cookbook I figured I would find a few recipes out of it that I wanted to try and almost an entire post it booklet later I have marked literally every other page of recipes that I want to try.For me, visual aids are a deal-breaker simply because I want to know that I've achieved the recipe.. every.. single recipe.. in this book has a picture, not just any old picture, beautifully photographed pictures! I find myself just looking at the pictures of the food that he has made, they are just stunning. There are imperfections in cooking and the way that these photographs were taken shows the imperfections which again is part of cooking, cooking is not a perfect art!Jamie Oliver puts a humble, simplistic spin on his dishes. These are not pretentious hard-to-find ingredients that you will scout your city and websites to try to find. The ingredients are easy to find, you can find almost everything in your local grocery store and that's what makes this cookbook so relatable.Additionally Jamie Oliver not only shows you the recipe, he talks about the history behind where the dish originates from, I appreciate that when I sit down to eat dinner with my family and I can share this information with my children, broadening their repertoire of food and culture.I think of all of the cookbooks that I have, and I have some of the top most popular cookbooks on the market this specific one takes the cake.Buy it.

My mom asked for this item for Christmas because she recently went on a cruise that had Jamie Oliver’s restaurant on it. She loved his food and said the one thing she wanted for Christmas was this cookbook. I am a mostly broke college student, so the price was a bit daunting for me since everything, including recipes, is online nowadays and I was seriously wondering if this book would be worth it. However, when it arrived, I was thrilled with how big it is! It is very high quality, very thick, and hardcover. I looked through the book with my mom and was thrilled to see British classics from my childhood such as beans on toast and toad in a hole, but more sophisticated. There are tons of recipes in this book, including drinks. I think it is definitely worth the price!

Always been a fan of Jamie Oliver and his cooking style - we have about 6 of his cookbooks and enjoy cooking the recipes over and over again. In this new book, the recipes are just as tasty and a bit more complex for the budding cook amongst you. My only real issue is that the measurements, and instructions, are off slightly and don't always produce the results you are looking for (or promised). That is the reason for the 4 stars, rather than 5.

This is my kind of comfort food! Not your usual mac 'n cheese, and 20 ways to make stodge. These are unusual, diverse and delicious.The beautiful pictures inspire me to want to cook more, and the helpful information (such as calories per serving, time to make, number of servings) make me feel in control, although the recipes aren't that difficult to make.I just love the introductions at the start of each recipe, his enthusiasm is contagious. This has got to be my favorite Jamie Oliver cookbook!

All my faves and lots more. Probably NOT a healthy book though :-) I was happy to find that the recipes were already converted to American measurements.

One of my best cooking books

Jamie Oliver is one of our favorite chefs and this cookbook does not disappoint. Not for the diet-oriented (although a few of the recipes are healthy), this is a must have for winter recipes that satisfy.

The only bad part of this book is trying to stay skinny if you leave it lying around. Yum, yum, yum.

This meticulously researched social history should be welcomed by specialists in British and European women's history. Vickery (British women's history, Univ. of London) challenges the standard argument that once the industrial revolution took production out of the home, women's lives were marginalized in the domestic sphere. Using the letters, diaries, and account books of more than 100 women from the "genteel" classes, she theorizes that women's activities actually expanded as they involved themselves in new areas of community life. Indeed, she concludes that the struggles of the Victorian suffragettes may have stemmed not from a sense of oppression but from a desire to expand the gains of their Georgian predecessors. Unfortunately, Vickery's insistence on proving her provocative thesis overwhelms the richness of the descriptive material she presents: there is good information here on household management, servants, material culture, shopping and consumption, and female attitudes on courtship, pregnancy, motherhood, and child rearing. Based on other reviews, I had great expectations for this book, and as a professional historian, I can certainly validate the value and significance of the work. Effectively, this book takes earlier research work and applies it to a small group of people to show how some of the general ideas were borne out. But, and I admit this may be a personal failing, it winds up being so focussed on just a few families that it can be hard to stay interested. As a micro-history it is excellent, but for my own personal interest, I would have liked to see how these micro-histories might imply something for the larger region, too.

This book reminds me of reading someone's doctoral dissertation--but that isn't meant to be an insult, just a comment on the writing style (academic). We are introduced to real women and their real situations by way of their letters and diaries. It is full of very interesting stories of a few related women in 18th century England. My only wish would be that the book could have been written to include women from other areas in England--really just more women in general. I appreciate the author's work in this under-researched area and hope it inspires more research in the future.I have long wished that I could have lived in Jane Austen's world (with epidurals). But after reading this I realize that I would rather keep my appliances and modern medicine and my legal rights. I appreciated this book because it broke me of my misconceptions about any kind of "romantic" life of the women of this "almost leisure" class, as another reviewer called it. They were at the mercy of their husbands, their social situation and fate. Very thought provoking for a Jane Austen fan like myself.

This book is gorgeously written. Ms. Vickery has a beautiful turn of phrase - exhaustively researched and an utter delight to read. Highest possible points go to the author. As other reviewers have commented upon, however, the print quality is not of the highest. The binding has cracked and the pages have come apart in the new copy I purchased, despite taking the usual care of a book when I am reading. I would absolutely read all of Amanda Vickery's work, but would be wary of another by this particular publishing house, which of course is very surprising given the fact that it is published by Yale University Press. They need to rethink their printing partner methinks!

Amanda Vickery's book is about the life of genteel (note that genteel does not equal aristocratic) women in the 18th and early part of the 19th century. It is divided into seven chapters that roughly coincide with major events and duties in a lady's life (courtship, marriage, motherhood, householding, shopping and entertainment). Vickery's thesis is that women were not marginalized in society during the 18th century, and did not operate in separate spheres leading up to the Victorian era. (She does not touch the Victorian era at all.) She proves this point well by sharing anecdotes from letters and books, newspapers and prints. But the book is also littered with jewels of information about all aspects of female life.My favorite chapter was that on childbirth and motherhood. There is a really fascinating excerpt on how midwives were slowly replaced by "male midwives," and then by physicians. "Ladies of quality" in the 18th and 19th centuries are given the short end of the stick as mothers. The belief persists that they were rarely invested in their children's lives; this is based mainly on the fact that many did not breast feed and apparently were too busy leading very busy lives to bother with their children. (If that is the criteria, then God only knows how mothers today would rate.) Vickery proves this completely wrong, which is gratifying, to say the least.Vickery's book can be slow-going at times due to the large number of citations that she makes in it, but that is the nature of an academic work. It is also full of interesting tidbits; for example, there was a ladies' debating society in the late 1700s which, among other things, debated whether a woman pledging obedience to her husband in her wedding vows required her to always follow his orders. It is definitely more in-depth in its material than many other books, so if you enjoy delving into history, this is for you.

Unbelievable - I paid $18 for the kindle version and it doesn't include any photos? Just blank spaces stating that I should refer to the print version. What BS.

I spent many hours gleaning many tiny facts, figures and impressions of the Georgian era. One of my favorites periods in time, I ran out of fiction books (that were not fantastical) to read. I'll read this several times as there is a great deal of information.

Excellent condition, fast shipping!! However, book was a chore to complete. Overly wordy and extremely mundane.

There are no illustrations in the Kindle edition. The text often refers to the illustrations, and there is page after page with a message that due to copyright etc, the illustration is not there. It quickly gets extremely annoying, to the point where I gave up reading. Sad, because the text is interesting and well written.
