Born in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies, Anthony C. Winkler was educated in Jamaica at Excelsior College, Mount Alvernia Academy, and Cornwall College, the last two being in Montego Bay. He was also educated at Citrus Community College, Glendora, California. Winkler taught briefly at Pasadena City College and for a year at Moneague Teachers College in Saint Anne, Jamaica, an experience chronicled in GOING HOME TO TEACH (1995). From 1968 to 1975 Winkler had sales territories as a bookman for Appleton Century Crofts textbook publishers, and later for Scott, Foresman. In 1969 he decided he could write textbooks as well as anyone and through a chance meeting with the sales representative of another company, he submitted the manuscript POETRY AS SYSTEM and was offered a contract for its publication. Eventually, he met Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell and the two became textbook writers and collaborators. Over the years they have produced more than a dozen textbooks, most on rhetoric and writing. I returned this book not long after receiving it. It covers way too many subjects, and each subject is short and very high level. I primarily bought it for the APA reference but it turned out to be inaccurate in many areas. I bought the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition instead and I have used it a lot while writing papers. Buy more specific books instead of this general, expensive overview.

About the Author

Jonathan Brand has been photographing daily life since 1956. A native New Yorker and Vermonter, he has also lived and worked in Scandinavia and Portland, Oregon. He developed his photography through study with some of the most accomplished photographers of our day: Richard Avedon, Garry Winogrand, David Vestal and Bruce Davidson. An acute observer of street life as well as everyday family rhythms, Brand has captured public and private moments in arresting images. Brand's work and friendship with Winogrand was the subject of a 2014 exhibition, "Two-Way Street: The Photographs of Garry Winogrand and Jonathan Brand", at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. Other solo and group exhibitions have been presented from Maine, to Oregon, to Sweden, including at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon; White Gallery at Portland State University and the Bennington Museum in Vermont. Brand's photographs are in public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Portland Museum of Art (Maine), the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), and the Bennington Museum. Julia Dolan is The Minor White Curator of Photography at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from Boston University, and has worked at institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Addison Gallery of American Art, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. Jonathan's eye for composition, humor, irony and engaging subject matter is expressed wholeheartedly in the photos chosen for this collection. The reproduction quality of the images maintains the depth of tonal range and film quality that is so fulfilling to view.This is a book that one wants to continually pick up and really examine the photos, getting something more from each image every time they are viewed.

Then there is a cookbook like LuLu's Kitchen that will hold a special place of honor at my house. The cover says that it was previously published as Crazy Sista Cooking. I can see why it was republished - so many terrific recipes from the Gulf Coast! All the bases are covered, appetizers, salads, main dishes, desserts and even cocktails. What I like about LuLu's Kitchen is that you'll want to just sit down and read it. Lucy Buffett is a smart and funny lady who shares the story of how she became so successful in the restaurant business while staying true to her southern roots. I've already tried a couple of the recipes and while I'm no chef, the food turned out really well! This is a cookbook that I'll be recommending all the time and giving as gifts for years to come.

If you love seafood, you'll love this cook book! I grew up along the Gulf Coast in Mobile, Alabama and my family and I spend most of our summers along it's shores! Now that I live in Texas, any time I'm homesick for the Emerald Coast, I pick up this book and cook a few of my favorite recipes. This past summer, we visited LuLu's while we were in Destin, Florida and it was well worth the visit! The cook book will not disappoint - you will love her stories intertwined with all those delicious recipes. The instructions are easy to understand and the finished product is as delicious as you can imagine!

Reading this book is like sitting with Lucy Buffett as she chats and cooks and tells stories. I love this cookbook, not just for the yummy recipes but even more for the author's voice. Besides the book is full-color which I love!!

I LOVE this cookbook. It's full of wonderful Gulf Coastal / Southern recipes that are great for real people. None of the crazy specialty techniques or ingredients that often plague today's cookbooks. This is a perfect cookbook for anyone from beginner to grandmas that have been cooking for years. Thank you Lucy for putting together a great cookbook full of wit and wisdom.

We visited Lulu Buffet's restaurant in Gulf Shores, Alabama recently and I loved the food so much I immediately came home and ordered the cookbook. I have read it from cover to cover. It is a wonderful book, full of fun and interesting stories, pictures, hints and recipes. Lulu is as good a cook as her famous brother is a singer!

Everything is worth cooking and I love the little stories she tells in the book, the carb sandwich is awesome and it awesome to eat at her restaurant and even better to have the cookbook.

Bought for the foreward by brother Jimmy....he presents family life with food and great to hear of his father which is him now...pics make me want some food and DRINKs

Love reading the dialogue about life - that is the first reason I bought this book and another for a gift. Then I started reading the recipes- many will easily appeal to home menus of non-Southerners too - mmmm! The philosophy of cooking and the parallel to living life is the joy of owning this book - between chapters of wisdom, try some of the great recipes! This book is a delight- a sturdy large paperback, colorfully illustrated, easy to read and follow, and fun spelled out on every page. Just get it and put a smile on your face!

Reisner's "Cadillac Desert" made me a fan of his writing; it covers water issues throughout the arid West. This work focuses particularly on Bay-area earthquake hazards. While the subject matter is not so geographically-widespread, ...on the one hand it seems no less urgent. On the other hand, for many it probably remains a matter of: "Out of sight, out of mind...UNTIL THE BIG ONE HITS!

Mr. Reisner is a very potent writer who is incredibly learned on this most scary of topics. I was already aware of these impending difficulties with regard to California but I learned an awful lot of background history that helped inform a better contextual grasp of the situation. The recent fires in the Sonoma valley are part and parcel of a future apocalyptic scene that will be orders of magnitude worse for the state and its peoples.

This book is required reading for all, not only Californians. We are talking here about the BIG ONE, the inevitable next large earthquake to hit the San Andreas fault system. It is not a question of if it will happen, but when -- next year, in 2010, or perhaps not until the year 2110? When it happens, it will undoubtedly be the largest national disaster on record, killing thousands, and destroying buildings and infrastructure with a cost of...well, some dollar figure best written with scientific notation.The book is organized into three parts: Part 1 summarizes the colonization history of southern California, L.A., and San Fransciso, explaining how the cities came to be and how half of the western population somewhat suprisingly now resides therein; Part 2 briefly discusses the basics of plate tectonics, earthquakes, and the numerous geographic and geologic hazards unique to California; and Part 3 is a fictional diary of the author's day set in the near future (February 28, 2005), the day a large quake occurs on the Hayward Fault on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. Parts 1 and 2 are both informative and well written, but it is Part 3 that is particularly disturbing; the entire scenario is drawn from experiences of past earthquakes and the author's local knowledge, and the description is quite plausible. The consequences of such an earthquake are difficult to envision, but I believe that you will find Mr. Reisner's fictional treatment really hits the mark.I read one of his previous books, "Cadillac Desert" and found it politically one-sided and tough to finish. This book is different. It is short (181 pages, I finished it in two sittings), very well-written, and carefully researched (as a professional geologist, even I was unaware of the consequences a large quake in San Francisco would potentially have to the water supply of Los Angeles).Sadly, the young Marc Reisner passed away in 2000, so this will likely be his last book. That is truly unfortunate! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a even a passing interest in U.S. history, science, and/or politics, and especially to those of you who live on the left coast.One thing for sure, as noted by the well-known philosopher Will Durant: "Civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice."

Factual representation in 1dt half of book for how CA has been changed and how a great quake will affect residents. Eye opening! Lived in the area for 35 year and had no idea of the affects. Lived through the "89 quake and was 10 miles from the epicenter in Santa Cruz.

Excellent and very readable companion to Mr. Reisner's "Cadillac Desert."

For all fans of Marc Reisner who mourn that he died too soon, this is a too-short but tantalizing glimpse at what his next book would have been. Like his earlier work, Cadillac Desert, this one focuses on California and the natural features that make it such an inhospitable place to put a civilization. The description of how the Los Angeles basin became urbanized is wonderful and informative. Not only is most of California an arid place, it is also a seismic accident waiting to happen....again. I had no idea that a combination of an earthquake in the Bay Area could -- nay, eventually WILL -- interact with the peculiar hydrologic and agricultural situation of the Sacramento Delta to cause a disaster that will deprive southern California of water for a long, long time.

I was more interested in "water usage & consumption" dynamics which were only marginally covered--however, a good summary of seismological issues.

I finally decided to review this book, having read it quite some time ago. The reason I waited this long is that I feared I wouldn't have been able to provide a fair assessment of the merits of this book. My problem is that, nowadays, I get easily bored reading yet another programming book. And a book entirely dedicated to a single programming language was bound to bore me infinitely.That's what happened, actually. I got so bored that it took me a really long time to finish it, even after skipping entire chapters. I managed to finish it only because I forced myself to do it.I know Ruby is cute, and has lots of nice and innovative features, but I just can't stand anymore reading operator precedence tables, variations on the basic control structures and core libraries. Last time I got excited by a programming language was with Java, and that was circa 1995. I'm too old for that.But I must try to stay objective and think how useful "Programming Ruby" could be to a young programmer and I have to admit the answer would be: a lot! As is customary with titles from The Pragmatic Programmers, quality is very high, both from a content point of view and from a presentation one as well. Well written, it even manages to inject a bit of humor into a dry subject. If you want a one stop shop reference for all Ruby, that's it! Not much more to say, except that I'd have liked, at times, the code samples to be longer, more structured and less contrived, but it's a minor nit.I suggest that you read it in bits and pieces, not cover-to-cover and if boredom gets you, you can always get a little of why's (poignant) guide to Ruby as an antidote.

This is "the book" if you want to learn Ruby. I had my share of the web-search-print-and-try approach to get a taste on Ruby, and after reading this book I can say I haven't been so pleased to learn a programming language in a while.This book it's proof of what the "Ruby way" is. It doesn't just walk you through the details, dos and don'ts of the programming language, it allows the reader to grasp the practice of the "Ruby way" of doing things. And it's a clean, elegant, yet powerful way!It's been such a nice experience it got me home late several times... I ended up at the subway terminal and making my way back for missing my station!I sincerely recommend it ... and if you are tempted to invent excuses for getting home late, then have him/her read it too!

Very well written and comprehensive primer for Ruby. Knocking one start off because this was the top result when I searched for it, leading me to buy it, but there are newer editions for later versions of Ruby available that should have been ranked much higher.

I dont have a lot to add here other than what the subject saya - having worked with multiple other languages (including perl) this book is a good reference and start point to get to know the basics of ruby before getting started on rails and such (if you want to know the basics of ruby behind it, which many rails manuals fail to address), like what and why and how a :symbol works in magical ways :) I read the first few chapters in full, then using it as a reference now.

Sometimes it is nice to be able to thumb through a reference book. Like when you have been staring at the computer screen for the past 8 hours trying to figure out a complicated programming problem. This book is well organized, has verious levels of detail for differnt skill levels. It covers a wide scope with sufficient examples.If you are just starting out in ruby or need a ruby reference, this is the place to get both.

I'm not sure how much the times have changed, but I got the second edition of this book on pre-order. At that time it was a fantastic references. It told me everything I ever wanted to know about the Ruby language. From the nice tutorials at the beginning to the excellent language and API reference toward the back. It even goes into some of the nitty gritty implementation details and has a chapter on writing C extensions.

Made an otherwise uneventful Saturday most interesting.

I found this book to be very informative. I am new to Ruby however I have read many other programming books.
