Erickson, director of the Center for Community Development Investments at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is published by the Urban Institute Press, 2009The Housing Policy Revolution is a top-notch analysis and review of affordable housing policy in America over the past 50 years and cogent thoughts for future directions. I own this book.Arising out of Erickson's PhD thesis at Berkeley, this book has inputs ranging from MIT to the Urban Institute and Brookings, and the Federal Reserve. Accordingly Erickson has written a thoughtful and careful book with thorough data and policy views in a comprehensive and readable. I have worked in affordable housing for many years, and learned a lot from Erickson's book.Erickson's general view is that development of affordable housing has generally evolved from directly-built and sponsored to a decentralized housing network including CDCs, state and local government agencies, capacity-building intermediaries, new private sector participants, foundations, churches, and other decentralized entities.There are 6 chapters:1. "Directions in housing policy from Lyndon Johnson to Ronald Reagan, 1963-1986". Chapter 1 discusses housing policy history in two phases: rise and fall of direct federal involvement, and federal cutbacks starting in 1981, with reviews of policies and activities from Lyndon Johnson's Great Society through Ronald Reagan's housing cutbacks.2. "Building the decentralized housing network". Chapter 2 looks in detail at the decentralized housing network, showing how the various components grew in sophistication and capacity over the 1980s.3. "Fighting for federal resources for the decentralized housing network". Chapter 3 discusses how the new network matured and secured more funding, influence and production capacity, building more housing than the Great Society programs did, and growing politically. Erickson discusses the establishment of housing tax credits in 1986 and changes and challenges to the tax credit programs over the next 20 years.4. "Lessons learned from what was built". Chapter 4 discusses examples and case studies of individual low-income apartments built by this decentralized housing network, showing growth of expertise and relationships within the network and enhanced capabilities. Multiple financing programs brought different players into a web of mutual support and supervision, with improving coordination and mutual supervision.5. "The decentralized housing network and the rise of a new institution". Chapter 5 discusses the growth and maturation of this decentralized housing network. Erickson shows, e.g. that by 2005 the number of CDC-built affordable rental units was 848,000; and while in 1969 there were 112 CDCs building affordable housing, by 2005 there were over 4,600.6. "How does thinking like a network change our approach to public policy?" Erickson provides a deep history of federal housing policy during the 20th century, highlighting the advent of public-private partnerships since the 1970's. This analysis provided a basis for how Seattle area public housing has resulted in mixed use projects that have built commercial & reduced income housing to mix with exclusively low-income. Erickson explains well how private sector and community organizations thrived in absence of direct federal spending, however these "networks" have still been unable to meet the housing needs of America's most needy citizens. In celebrating these public-private partnerships, Erickson also seems to minimize the risk of the sub-prime mortgage market. Overall, a good read to understand modern urban development.

I couldn't agree more with David Hoicka's review. I, too, have been in the affordable housing industry for years (14 now and counting), but only after reading David Erickson's lucid book did a clear picture of housing evolution in this country coalesce for me. From the '60s Great Society to the inchoate CDC network of the '70s, through the Reagan decimation years and subsequent creation of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, and finally to the rise, maturation, and sophistication of the "decentralized housing network," Erickson charts the fascinating history of the affordable housing industry, providing invaluable context and inspiring affirmation for the work that we do. Cheers to David Erickson for adding this important volume to the housing policy canon.

Full Disclosure: I am not a reader of K M Weiland's series of fiction books. But these two books are not fiction and I AM - not only a fan of Weiland's writing series - I have e-copies tucked into my IPad, which functions more as a massive library than anything else, plus two sets of hardcopies with many pages browned, dogeared and marked with tabs for quick reference, even some waterspots because I read in the tub for greatest relaxation and retention. Because these two books are superb writing resources, possibly the most accessible on the market in terms of readability and sheer "usefulness."There's no wasted space, run on self-praise, just pure hardcore knowledge of what I think of as "the discipline of writing explained clearly." Because it seems to me many writers get lost in their words, worlds, and stories, so attatched to what they wrote when it comes to the nitty-gritty to send it to an agent or publisher, their brain enters a specific "protective mode" that filters or masks the true craft of storytelling. Exiting will always be a necessary and painful process in novel writing. These two books, well studied will arm the writer with the weapons necessary to be tough with yourself at the most critical early junctures: planning, outlining, then moving to writing, editing... its valuable before you set fingers to type... Outline First. Its amazing how the story unfolds from this process, especially if your characters seem to run with it while you're typing or dictating to keep up! It can you save you months of work and soothe the writing beast. Of course, you'd expect the beasts to be on our side from a Fantasy writer! Trust her, she knows.

These are awesome!!! I needed a new direction, and to kind of make sure I am doing things right. I didn't go to school for writing, however I want to write books, because I have so much knowledge and I just wanted to share it. The outlining everything out first to have a direction, is part of the writing process. One in which I totally forgot about. I have gone to school for other degrees, and well just want to get my information out there for others to learn from.Outlining, supports your ideas, and it gives you the chance to plan out your moves and your table of contents. I appreciate everything K..M. Weiland does for individuals that didn't go to school to become a writer. I have learned so much and it gave so many ideas in general about how to do and outline or get your ideas out and see their connections.Each Chapter was another step along the way to building an outline and then with the workbook, it just helps you to move along in the process. There are great links that she gives to help you further your knowledge in writing.I would tell anyone who inspires to write and become a writer to take a deep look into her works and her tools of the trade, because she is a great teacher.I would suggest to get this box set on Outlining your Novel, and Structuring your Novel box set. K.M. Weiland does a fantastic job in making the writing process click for me. I've read several of her books in the last few months in preparation for National Novel Writing Month. I credit her for the improvement I've seen in my writing over the last few years.So far I've read her books on my Kindle, but will probably start purchasing them in hard copy when I'm back in the US again. I think it would be easier for me to look back for information. As is, I took her advice about using the workbook as my reference and I wrote out the exercises in my computer. (I think she suggested handwriting them in a notebook, but I prefer to have my documents easily at hand on my laptop.)Weiland also has a blog which is a treasure. I really appreciate this author sharing her knowledge and experience in analyzing plot and character with new writers like myself.

It doesn't get any better or clearer than this. Ms. Weiland guides you through the process with a helping hand. A newbie writer should enjoy this, but I think experienced writers might even get more out of it. After writing for long enough, it's very refreshing to get into outlining since it saves time and helps build a better story. You get all the advice on writing the outline and then- the best part for me- the work book. Now you can apply all you've learned by answering the questions and completing the exercises. It's a marvelous experience and I know I am miles ahead of where I would have been on my current project. This set is pure gold.

I thought I would not do any outlining that would ever lead any where. But after reading this, I'm pretty well set on my plot, etc. I'm also reading her structure books and will do that workbook as well. I feel that I know my story going in, and I will more successfully complete it. Now, on to NaNoWriMo! And beyond...

I bought this bundle to save my sanity. And my time. I participated in NaNoWriMo 2013 as a pantser-I wrote by the seat of my pants with no outline and ended up with a nice pile of 50,324 words but not much of a story! I put my manuscript away for two years and now it's time to fix it. I've read quite a few books on revision, structure and plot and I have to say that K.M. Weiland's books are the clearest description of the concepts that I've seen yet! I finally understand!!!! Next time I write a novel I will use what I've learned from these books and plot an outline-a loose map of where I want to go and the stops I need to make along the way-then I'll pants my way from point to point. Thank you, K.M., thank you.

 I used this book for a costume history class, it was very helpful, but I couldn't take it to class with me at risk of it falling apart. The front cover looks like it is going to fall off. The 30-40 pages or so have water damage so they are wavy and bumpy. When I ordered it, I think it said Used- LIke New or in Good condition, but they may have been hyping it up a bit much. Most of the pages after the 40 page mark and on are perfect, though so the book is definitely still usable. I added video of just the first few pages that have water damage so they are stuck together, and the photos show how the pages are separating from the cover.

I love this book, I use it as my teaching source for my Fashion History class in our theatre and film department. I wish I had known about it in time to get the instructors version through school. It has a good vocabulary section for fashion terminology and my students appreciate the references from historical time periods that influenced contemporary fashion pieces. The context of fashion as human history works well to engage budding directors and designers in seeing clothing as the extension of characters within any particular time period. I wish I had access to more of the interactive materials.

This book is an excellent and detailed source on costumes through the ages. Not sure why the others reviews are a bit harsh on it, but I am more than pleased. I don't find it so awful in that it lacks bunches of colorful prints- heck, if all the drawings were colorized this book would be a very expensive resource.I'm a simple person, and I'm very pleased with the entire book.

I thought it was “necessary” to upgrade from the pink-covered version +/- 2005. The layout is clearer and some of the images are better. That’s really it and I would’ve been fine with my older version.

Rented this for a class and it came in perfectly acceptable used condition and it's pretty informative although it glosses over some pretty influential periods in fashion history or combined many decades into a single chapter of information.

There is no comparison with any book out there. If you are a costumer, reenactor, or history buff you should have this on your shelf, period.

About the Author

Keith McIntyre has a BSc Hons from the University of New England and a MSc from the Australian National University. He has 34 years of experience in horticulture and sportsturf. He worked for the Australian National Botanic Gardens for 8 years, and then moved to City Park's Technical Services Unit in Canberra, a specialist group working in soils, drainage, irrigation, pest management, tree management, and urban lake management. Keith worked there for 19 years and managed the Unit for 5 years. This Unit built up a reputation for excellence in cool season turf management and irrigation, but its most important contribution was in the field of sportsground construction, soils, and drainage. Keith left the ACT Government in 1995 , and set up his own consultancy--Horticultural Engineering Consultancy in Canberra. His current main area of expertise is in sportsturf and the associated areas of design, profile design, drainage, and soil selection. He has recently been involved in seven of the new facilities being constructed for the 2000 Olympics. Dr. Bent Jakobsen has a BAg and a PhD in Soil Science from the royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen. He has spent much of his working life working on compaction in agricultural soils, and on particle movement within soils. He worked for CSIRO in Adelaide at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute on agricultural soil compaction and with the CSIRO Division of Forest Research on soil compaction problems associated with logging operations. Bent spent six years at Canberra's Technical Services Unit Working with Keith on Soil and drainage problems. He has been responsible for developing several simple, but very effective, laboratory testing techniques to determine the compacted hydraulic conductivity of soils, and has related these tests to the real world of sportsturf use. His in-depth knowledge of soil physics and his ability to apply this science to the development of sportsturf profiles has made a unique contribution to the industry.

George E. Rejda is a nationally known expert on private insurance and social insurance programs. He is a Past President of the American Risk and Insurance Association. His primary research areas are Social Security and unemployment insurance. I'm giving this four stars because the pros definitely outweigh the cons -- I ordered this book "used - very good condition" it was the correct book, arrived sooner than expected, and has what I would consider only slight wear and tear. Great so far. But... As shown in the attached pictures, it arrived with several large, unnecessary stickers all over the front and back covers. These proved almost impossible to remove, and the one that I did manage to partially get off left a sizeable spot of sticky residue. Overall, I was still glad to get this book for much less than I would have paid elsewhere, and it's certainly usable -- but something like this would have been nice to know about before placing an order.

Book was in good shape, however the contents are not exactly the same. Chapter 1 and 3 (so far) the Application questions don't match. Per my professor and Chegg, the AQ in the US print is different from the AQ in this book.If you are getting it to rely on the AQ accuracy, try somewhere else.

Same textbook as the hardcover book, just a different title. Saved me a lot of money!

With the price of the book I was expecting it to be in deplorable condition but I was willing to accept it in whatever condition it comes in than pay the amount my school was asking. The book came in excellent condition, barely any sign of wear. Couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Book arrived in good packaging but the book itself is falling apart. Part of book is falling out of binding.

Very pleased with this product. Purchased a used text figuring it would be well used for the price point--instead I received a used text in excellent condition.

I wish that there was a six star option. I'm a dentist, and I have just enough medical knowledge to be dangerous. Cannot recommend it more highly. If you can only buy one medical reference book, this is IT!

Dr. La Guardia does a very thorough job of describing effective alternatives to standard treatment for times when those methods are not available or out of reach. We all know the value of antibiotics when properly used to treat a wound infection but what if those antibiotics are needed yet not available? What do you do then? Well, Dr. La Guardia goes into detail on how to most effectively manage such things when the standard methods are not available and often using things that can be found in most households. I have 14 books on emergency medicine. This by far is the very best as the author is deadly serious about the subjects he covers in great detail. There is serious reading in his book and I comfortably recommend this book very highly. Study this book in great detail, read , reread and then read it again until it is fixed in your mind. Also covers natural medicine just in case you run out of prescription medicine.

This is an excellent book on self-reliance in maintaining your body. I have written 17 books on the subjects of health that have sold over 2 million copies. One of my books, Healing Nutrients, was an effort in the direction of Dr. LaGuardia's book. The title of this book is somewhat self-limiting. This book could have been called: "The replacement for Obama Care", or "What to do when you doctor is not around", or "How to take care of your body", or "The pioneer's book of medicine". Read this book. Keep it nearby. Whether we have some major disruption of services or not, this book will serve you and your family well for decades.
