Abrams is a fantastic reporter who excels at earning his subjects' trust. This is a treasure trove of anecdotes and insider info for anyone who loved The Wire. Some knowledge of the show's events and themes is probably a prerequisite for enjoying or even understanding the book, since many of the interviews proceed from an assumption that the reader knows the show intimately. For real Wire obsessives, the most interesting contribution may come from series co-creator Ed Burns, whose reclusive nature has kept his voice hidden from most of the discourse up until this point but shows himself here unafraid to barbecue a few of the show's sacred cows.

I just stumbled onto this book, but when I did, I had to read it. The Wire was my favorite show for years, and the kind of deep dive offered here was very valuable. Virtually the entire cast and a lot of crew provide an extensive oral history of the Wire, and I tore through it really quickly.Quite often you come across articles and books that describe a creative work through the perspective of a writer, or a number of actors. The approach here is more broad-based, focusing on the look of the show, and it's relationship to the Baltimore community, as well as the up-front talent.Any fan of the Wire,or anyone interested in how great TV is made, often despite the studios and networks, will find something of interest here.

overall, the book is entertaining. Fans of the wire will enjoy the stories, particularly the off the set camaraderie among the cast. I would have liked to have seen more balanced reporting; the author leaned too much on Andre Royo, Michael K. Williams, and Wendell Pierce to name a few. Little from Wood Harris and other characters critical to show's intrigue. Author chose curious points of focus. Example, dedicates more time/analysis to the character Snoop than any other character. Snoop's a fine character but curious to dedicate that much ink to a bit character.I'd recommend this with reservations that enthusiastic Wire fans temper expectations.

I got into the television show, The Wire, late like many viewers. I had been reading all the press and finally decided to catch up on the first three seasons prior to season four, widely considered to be the best of the series, in 2007. It was ground breaking in its realism, season long story arcs and the overall theme of the futility of institutions such as police, the government, schools, and the press. Jonathan Abrams has produced a book, All The Pieces Matter: The Inside Story Of The Wire, in which he interviews cast and crew about the ground breaking former HBO series, whose popularity seems to increase as each year passes. Obviously, this is a book for fans of the show. The are some interesting anecdotes and insights into how the show was made and obstacles they faced to get five seasons for an HBO series with a low viewer audience. I enjoyed the look back at my favorite TV series of all-time.

This was, indeed, exactly what I wanted from a book about The Wire. Interesting little stories from the people involved in the show; a sense of what it took to get the show going, and to continue in the face of an ongoing threat of cancellation; how everyone felt about the characters; and what everyone hoped to accomplish. Also, I really like the oral history format. And now I must watch the show again.

What a marvelous look at the actors and creators of the best project ever to be aired on television. This show will be watched by generations of individuals. The idea that it took a long time to be recognized and appreciated by television audiences is really not surprising. Most people are raised to watch idiotic shows with canned laughter and moronic scripts. When they finally watch something like "The Wire" their brain is in shock.This show will live forever. There will always be a West Baltimore somewhere with a myriad of stories to be told.BRAVO.

I'm using this book for my intro to CS class, which is still in progress. I find this book well organized, informative, fun, high quality and interesting. I would absolutely recommend it.One thing you should know about this book is that it is not an introduction to programming. It is an introduction to the topics of computer science and the main theme is centered around algorithims. You won't be learning anything too complicated here, but it will be a broad introduction that no programming book/class could compete with.

Extremely illustrative with great colors. Very organized. It was for my first CompSci course, was easy to read. When read from start to finish, you really begin to understand how your knowledge is compounded form earlier chapters. The book starts at the 'low-level' of computing and progresses to the 'higher-levels' of computing. Simply said, low-level can be binary operations and such that the computer's internals take care of, and high-level refers to concepts that humans can think about and handle.

I am extremely pleased with this item. I was hesitant about buying a “used” book without seeing it first but the book arrived in pristine condition.

Honestly, I don’t understand the textbook and I don’t know how could I pass the class without understanding. I felt like learning a foreign language. It is maybe useful for those who have the computer baseline which I don’t.

A really good CS foundation book. I was not a fan of how some of the concepts in the book were covered but to each their own. Most people will be buying this as a class text so they won't have a choice but to use it. With that said, despite my opinion on the poor coverage of a few of the concepts, overall the book is very informative and engaging and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good foundations book.

The authors approach the subject in a disciplined, orderly manner. Each chapter builds on the last one and the explanations are clear.

I read this book knowing very little about computer science. This book did an excellent job of explaining complicated concepts to the layman, from the way a computer works in binary code, to high level programming, to the internet. Highly recommended for beginners

Richard J. Evans was born in London and educated at Oxford University. He has taught at Columbia University and Birkbeck, University of London, and since 2014 has been the Regius Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Cambridge. His many publications include an acclaimed three-volume history of the Third Reich and a recent collection of essays, The Third Reich in History and Memory. A Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature, he is a past winner of the Wolfson History Prize, and was twice a History Honoree at the Los Angeles Times Book Awards. In 2012 he was appointed Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List, for services to scholarship.

I purchased this book on the basis of newspaper reviews and the author's considerable reputation as an historian. I expected a readable history of the main currents in politics, society and the economy in Europe over the century covered. The book does not disappoint. But the author over reaches by also trying to cover the major developments in art, music, literature and the frontiers of science. That treatment is too often superficial and not related to the book's main focus. His treatment often comes off as no more than name dropping. Do we need to know that the French Symbolists and Impressionist paintings may have influenced the music of Debussy and Ravel? To show the spread of science, on pages 497 to 498 Evans rattles off a list of scientists and their achievements, but without drawing connections to their work or the impact on the further advancement of science. For example, the significance of the work of the Curries, Rontgen and Rutherford (mentioned) and Max Planck (not mentioned) ushered in the exploration of the atom, which would dominate the physical sciences in the 20th century. The book is organized into sections and subsections in which Evans explores various themes. Information and facts can come from all directions to prove a generalization. That can sometimes be interesting, but also disconcerting. In discussing the changing concept of modern time Evans brings in racing tea clippers, the sinking of the Titanic, the depiction of time and motion in early 20th century paintings, experiments in the French cinema and Einstein's theory of special relativity (pages 393-394). The facts don't always integrate and the generalizations don't entirely convince. The narration is aided by 20 special maps and a lovely midsection of glossy color reproductions of art related to historical events. There is a 10 page guide to further reading. The book is directed at the general reader, so there are no scholarly notes. Even with its shortcomings and excesses, that only take up only a small part of the book, Evans has written a fascinating, readable narrative history of the European century before it plunged into world war.

This is the way I prefer to read history. Not limited to politics and wars, important as these might be, but also covering daily life, technology and culture. Possibly more scholarly than I would ideally have liked it (no character, no matter how minor, is introduced without his / her dates of birth and death), but extremely well written and as much of a page turner as a fine scholarly book can be.

The distinguished Oxford Historian Richard Evans has given us a kaleidoscopic view of European civilization during the century it came to dominate the globe. A reader will learn a lot by going through this very long book (848 pages in the print edition without footnotes or endnotes.) In my opinion too long for the average lay reader. Evans offers us a bottom-up socio-political history where the focus is more on the average citizen and culture than the political elite.In essence Evans discusses how Europe came to terms with the political earthquakes brought about by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars and the industrial revolution. In 1815 the so called Concert of Europe is brought into being by Metternich as a conservative reaction to the French Revolution. That framework largely keeps the peace until 1848. This book is not a new synthesis by any means, in fact there aren't even any source notes on the body of the text, but it is a very solid and well written survey of the political, cultural and social history of Europe from the Congress of Vienna to the outbreak of WW1. If all you are interested in is political history this will not be for you, as only about 1/3 of the book is pure political history. Evans gives equal time to the lives of the "normal people" and the events that had deep influence on them. If you are familiar with Evans' previous works on European history than you know that the book will be readable despite its considerable length.

This was a good book about what was to me the missing century between Napeleon and the Grear War. It else really helped me understand the roots of modern liberalism and progressive politics. It really helps explain how the world was leading to Great War.

I teach 20th Century American History, so I decided to read Richard Evan's mighty tome regarding 19th Century Europe and I am very glad I did. Every trial and tribulation America has suffered through in the 20th Century happened to Europe in their 19th. The effects of stupidity, inventions, politics, wars, banking, legal changes, agriculture, military modernization, industrialization, transportation/infrastructure, foreign policy, health systems, environmental changes, diversity, rise of political parties, economics, education and the rise of the university, information via print, development of energy sources, and the rise of the everyman theory in national leadership...it is all in Evan's well-documented, well-written masterpiece.This is a must read for an historian.

What really sold me is the name, edited by Peter Stearns, author of World Civilizations. This book is most useful for teaching AP World History.

This compendium of documents edited by Peter Stearns offers more the the usual materials one finds in most primary source compilations. They are long enough to allow students to really dive into the text but not so long as to be tedious.

Passed first time in GA. I was told this is getting exceedingly rare and that even retake pass percentage is low. Three reasons for, I believe, passing first time:I took a GOOD online course with North Georgia Tech. The course required 4 hours a day (Mon to Fri) and still took me 3 months to complete. Note 75 hours is only a MINIMUM!Second, I also bought the North Georgia Tech add on exam questions; these were good but did not provide enough exam practice.Third, I bought Barron's; I actually didn't read much of the book, but I did take all the chapter example exams and the end practice license exams as though in exam conditions.North Georgia Tech proctored exam mark: 92%. AMP salesperson exam: Pass.There are NO Shortcuts; if you want to pass the License exam you need to work hard. Barron's will prepare you for the exam, but you'll also find the actual exam is much tougher than anything on your salesperson course or in Barron's.

This book was VERY helpful to me as I prepared for the real estate exam. There are multiple practice test in the back of the book (8 of them) and also questions at the end of each chapter. I loved this book and passed the test on my first attempt! Thanks Barron's!!

Excellent review and practice exams. The material and format of this book complemented my salesperson pre-licensing course. It really helped to see the information from 2 different sources (the class and this book) to be the most prepared for the test. I will be holding on to this book for review down the road when I take my broker exam.

This textbook was my only source of studying after I completed my 60 hour DC course. This book has all the information you need for the national portion of the exam. While I do feel it would be beneficial to a student if it were organized by the sections of the national exam, all the information you needed to know was in that book. It did an excellent job helping me understand concepts I was struggling with-mets, bounds, monuments, and ownership. Please note however that because the book does contain all the information you need to pass the exam-if is up to you to organize how you will study the chapter.I suggest studying the chapters that are relevant to the exam portions with the most questions are working backwards from there.

I passed my test on the first take just from reading the important sections of this book and doing the practice exam. Highly recommend.

I took my licensing exam many months after I took the RE course at my local college. I mainly used only this book to study and the spiral book from my Fortune Academy class. Be sure to check the The Examination Content Outlines for your state's test (not in the book)
