When I was a teenager, my appreciation of nature and the outdoors was enhanced by being out in it as a Boy Scout and the way we played outdoors in those olden days. There were field guides and handbooks about trees, plants, rocks, and fauna that I collected and used. My grandchildren are reaching the age where such guides would be useful to them, as well.So, I went on Amazon and looked around at what was available nowadays. Obviously, the guides I used as a kid are long gone. There were much more comprehensive (and expensive) books. But what I liked about the guides I used is that they had the items I was more likely to encounter here in Michigan, the guides had a manageable number of items and pages, were organized for quick use and finding what I was looking at in a logical and clear way, was physically small enough to fit in a pocket or backpack, and had nice pictures and just enough information to help me understand something about the plant, animal, or rock.I settled on this guide because it was affordable, had good comments from other people, and seemed to have the right mix of what I was after. When it arrived, I was delighted. It was exactly what I was after.The guide is organized by how the needles or leaves grow on the branches of the tree so you can quickly, almost instantly, get to the part of the guide relevant to the tree you are looking at.When you get to the correct page, there is a big photo of the leaves so you can be sure you have the correct tree, and there are little inset photos of the bark, flower, and fruit (if relevant). These are on the left page. On the right hand page, you get the scientific family the tree is in, its height range, a description of the tree, the leaf, the bark, the flower, the fruit, its color in the fall, its origin in Michigan (native or imported from elsewhere) and how long they tend to live. We also get info on the kinds of places it prefers to grow (habitat), and its range in the state. The author then provides a paragraph of interesting notes about the tree and its connection to other trees.I find this guide terrific and plan on picking up other guides in this author’s series of nature guides. I live in Michigan and already own the Birds of Michigan Guide by Stan Tekeila. So, when I saw the Trees Guide of Michigan by the same author, I decided to give it a try.We moved to an area in Michigan with some nice old trees in our yard that I had no idea what they were. After I received the book, a few days ago, I went outside to check out some trees. I found out what they were immediately. I had a Bur Oak and another was Witch Hazel. I took a leaf from each and put it right in the book so I wouldn't forget.The Trees of Michigan Field Guide is really handy to use. There is a photo on one page with additional little photos of the bark, cone and so on. Then the other page gives hints about the particular tree so that you can identify it. One interesting fact is how long each tree might live. The Bur Oak should live between 150 and 250 years! I am pretty sure it was here when the Indians lived in this area. It is pretty huge.This is a fine little book and I would highly recommend it.

I am so happy i bought this book. Its one of my most used books now. The pages are really well laid out and easy to use out side. I am going on a GPS tree hiking tour and this will be very handy. Its easer to see the photos than a phone screen out in the sun shine. The info and interesting facts are on the same page as the leaf and bark photos so its easy to get all your facts fast and right.If you live in Michigan and you want to expand your knowing about tees i highly recommend this book.

Book very well organized with MUST-READ instructions on how to classify and search for the trees. Within a few minutes I finally identified what grows next to my cottage and what tree had those berries - we put a neighborly dispute to rest :).

This is the best tree book. I got this for my husband and he is sooo pleased. He was complaining that the books he has really can't help identify the trees. Well this one does, it has the full picture, the leaf, the bark, the blossom, the seed or fruit and a great written description. It is compact enough that he can put it in his pocket when he goes into the woods.

I have many of Stan Tekiela's field books and the simplistic design still amazes me in how useful the guides are. These are superb field guides which I have used for years now. Great purchase for the young and old!

If you like Susan Branch as an artist and all her books, stickers, cards, books, you will love Favorite Family Recipes!

I love most of this book, the only drawback was that there were not enough pages for all of my recipes. There was space for 18 recipes in the "Main Dishes" section. Which might be enough for most people. Other than that I absolutely love this book! It's easy to use and I love the spiral spine, it allows you to fold the book in half and makes it easier to write in. It a good size and durable.

My mother passed away this past summer and my sisters and I were searching a way to honor her memory in a way that can be passed on to others again and again. We decided to make family cookbooks similar to the one she made us. This is the perfect book for that special project. The book is lovely, as I would expect from such a dear author and illustrator. The pages are easy to write on, they make sense in their structure, and the artwork and quotes inspire. My mother would truly love this. I highly recommend.

All in all, I liked the book.The story is engaging, in ways also incredible.Descriptions are fantastic, they excite imagination. Style is light, humorous, language fitting to the historical era in the story.What bothered me was that Alice and Ethan seemed undecided in character. I felt as if Alice was a damsel in distress and an independent heroine at the same time, and Ethan was both grumpy and pleasant at the same time. Or maybe I had just too great the expectations, since I have read so much praise of Marc Levy.I was intrigued by the olfactory theme - Alice is a "nose" - she is experiencing the world through smells and remembers smells. This theme alone is enough for the book to be interesting.I liked how both Ethan's and Alice's story were interwoven in the overall story. They are quite balanced and their backgrounds are neatly rationed through the story.I loved the shape and POV of the book. At first there is the usual, 3rd person narrative, and nearing the end, there comes a letter format. She tries to put it out of her mind, but finds herself pacing the floors at night as she ponders the mystery. Eventually her curmudgeonly neighbor is so fed up that he drives her back to Brighton, and finds himself drawn into the story too, so much so that he finances a trip to Turkey for them both. Could he be the first of the six people that the fortune teller has told Alice she will meet in her quest for answers? As the journey continues we meet truly fascinating characters that leap off the page, and gradually reveal the tragic secrets of Alice's past, while possibly having a role to play in her future.Sweet, simple and moving, this charming tale was a pleasure to read, the author writes with real warmth and heart and has a truly impressive skill when it comes to bringing places vividly to life on the page.I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

Over.Marc Levy is fast becoming one of my new favorite authors and I am so glad that I got to read this book!!It is difficult to review this book without giving anything away and trust me, you DO NOT want to have any kind of spoiler with this book - this book is best read knowing nothing going in but the title and just diving in and savoring it and falling in love with it and with the characters. Alice and Ethan are just such great characters and I just loved them almost from the moment you meet them in the book. They are just so well-written and believable and just so glorious; them and their story. Glorious. Fantastic. Magical. One I am so glad that I got to read and experience. The cover grabbed me (why yes, I do judge a book by it's cover!) and the description intrigued me but I did not expect to enjoy it so much! It was delightful and the narrator was perfect. I found myself sucked into Alice's world and really didn't want it to end. The characters were believable and likable. I will be talking about this book to anyone and everyone that will listen! I have a few books that are favorites and I read annually...I will be adding The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury to my list! This may be my book club pick this year and if not I will be recommending they read it. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

I really loved this story. It's one of those whose characters you'll miss once the story ends. Mr Levy is also a writer who can bring a setting to life and put you there. From England to Turkey he weaves his magic, and transports you there with Alice as she discovers whom she is, and why she has travelled to Istanbul in search of love, identity and a life worth living based on the words of a fortune teller. You're going to love reading this book. I promise.

I like this book so much. It looks like it's new

I bought this because my daughter's school cleaned out her locker when she wasn't there and told me the book was missing. She couldn't get her grades until the book was paid for full new replacement at something like $70. So I bought this brand new for about $10 and had the teacher write the missing book number on it. They want a replacement - they got it.

the text was like new. great value for the price. would purchase again if i had to do so. thanks.

Purchased this for Homeschool use and have found it to be a good, basic book for my 8th grader. I like the fact that there are "mini quizzes" at the end of each section, so the student can check him/herself on the knowledge they've learned. The chapters are laid out nicely, and the full color pictures are bright and interesting. If you buy this book for teaching purposes, I would recommend the accompanying Study Guide as well, unless you plan to be very hands on with the teaching. Also, be aware that this book does have a section on reproduction, though it's more about the biology of procreation than the act. I would definitely recommend this book to secular homeschoolers.

This book is essential! Very well put together book, all the varying women in our group found atleast one chapter that just spoke to a very special season of life.

This is an essential for living within -- and maintaining healthy relationships. Too many people want revenge and carry painful wounds for years - when it is so unnecessary -- as a psychologist -- I see those people -- they can and do heal, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

As a book-loving Christian for all of my adult life, I have sought wisdom from the Bible as my main resource. I've also looked for wisdom from Christian writers. With a few notable exceptions (Elisabeth Elliot, Joni Tada, Margaret Clarkson, Edith Schaeffer), it seems that the majority of books written for Christian women is like cotton candy -- cute to look at, fun, but no real nourishment. Then I was told about "Peacemaking Women". What a smorgasbord of insight, wisdom and life-changing truths I've encountered in this book! The authors (Tara Barthel and Judy Dabler) have caused me to examine the depth and reality of my Christian faith...am I just playing games or do I really want to promote the Gospel through my changed life? The book is divided into three sections: Conflicts with God, Conflicts with Others and Conflicts Within. The chapter on idolatry (Chap. 2) is worth the price of the book alone. I am challenged through this book to unflinchingly test my attitudes, my words and my actions against the truth of the Word of God. It has been a humbling and yet encouraging process to go through this book and shine the light of truth onto my much-loved besetting sins. Real growth is possible for the serious Christian and this book offers plenty of food for thought. Highly recommended.

This is an amazing book for women who struggle in relationships. Tara and Judy do an amazing job of bringing the gospel hope to women who are struggling. I love that they spend so much time reminding us of God's love and grace for us rather than just giving us a checklist of things to do. Tara and Judy truly understand how women struggle with relationships because they themselves have struggled and they are upfront and honest about their own weaknesses. An amazing read!!

Peacemaking Women by Tara Barthel and Judy Dabler is a gem of a book. I've read it three times now, and it's marked up and tabbed so that I can refer to it again and again. It lives up to its subtitle -- Biblical Hope for Resolving Conflict. While teaching us that conflict is an opportunity to grow in Christ, the authors constantly point the reader to the Gospel. The chapter on Idolatry is worth the price of the book!Peacemaking Women is divided into helpful sections (Conflicts with God, Conflicts with Others, Conflict Within) and meaty chapters. The authors include helpful resources and questions for further thought at the end of each chapter. I've used this book in a small group study, and it works well that way. It offers helpful information and encouragement for married women, single women, older women, young women, mature believers, and new believers.

Have read and given this book to so many people. Highly recommend the tapes as well. Did this for a group study and it is the one that keeps coming up in discussion to do again.
