Good explanation of Congress. Unfortunately, on the first page, it states that the USA is a democracy. We do not allow the will of the majority to rule unrestrained over the minority. America is a constitutional republic or even a constitutional federal representative democracy, but definitely NOT just a democracy. I took a sharpie pen to the book to correct. My children will learn the difference! Writers and editors should reprint a new edition. Including definitions might be helpful also.

This series is a great way to introduce elementary age children to our government. I found it to be very helpful teaching elementary kids in a read aloud setting as well as beneficial for review for middle school children to study independently. Here in the United States we are considered to be a "democracy." In other words that means that we, as a people, select the people who run our government and "make the laws." We have three different branches in our government, but the one that is responsible for making the laws in the Congress. It is the "legislative, or lawmaking, branch." Congress consists of two houses, on is the Senate and the other is the House of Representatives. In this book you will find out who occupies each house and what they do.For example you will learn that in the House of representatives the elected members serve for two years and represent approximately 690,000 people. If you come from a small state, you have fewer representatives. At this time we have 435 members in the House. In the Senate there are only 100 members and each elected senator serves six years. Each state, regardless of size, is entitled to two representatives and as a result "all states have equal power in the Senate." You will learn about the Speaker of the House, the powers each branch has, the committees, how they write and pass bills, how an "idea turn[s] into a law," requirements for election, the kinds of sessions they have, privileges accorded the members, their histories and you'll get to read about several "memorable moments in Congress."This is a clear, concise overview of Congress that is very easy to read and laid out in a very appealing manner. This is a "True Book" that challenges the student to figure out which of two statements presented in front of the book is true. There are numerous fun facts scattered throughout the book, informative sidebars and photographs. To teach children that we live in a democracy is inaccurate and irresponsible.

If you're a parent and you still need to work through the emotions of your past, read this book. As a parent, I'm a life long learner and I have to remain open to new thoughts and paradigms in terms of parenting. This book will expand your thoughts in parenting and teenage awareness. As a parent to four kids, two of which are teens, I need to be reminded of what it was like to be a teen. Emotions are high with teens and sometimes they can't get past them as quick as we think they should. Suicide is a heavy topic but it needs to be brought into regular conversations, not hushed tones. I'll recommend this book for years to come.

The book is an excellent reference book for one looking for details at a grass roots level when building a unique quadcopter. There are numerous examples to help with understanding what the issues are for designing firmware, sizing motors, flight control considerations, etc. Very helpful for a newbie just getting into quad building. What it lacked was the latest standardized flight control PCB's like the Naze32, etc. It is oriented toward the DJI products that were current about 18 months an earlier ago.I recommend the book to any newbie and it would be helpful to sit down with a very experienced quad builder to help with some of the details if details are important. Somewhat like a new aspiring pilot would do with a CFI.

This is an outstanding book for what it is. As someone with a background in computer science, some basic electronic engineering knowledge, and a ham radio license I found the material to be very approachable and a useful introduction to the underlying function of modern RC technology. I do not have nor expect to have the parallax product referenced in the book, so I was able to move quickly through sections which were specific to that hardware. The book would have been just as good if it left the parallax portions out, and even better if it replaced them with some more hardware agnostic material addressing i2c, sbus, and other common technologies in use today.All in all, this book is the most technical book I have found on the topic and written in a way that someone new to RC but versed in adjacent field of knowledge could make great use of it. Well done to the author.

This book is a comprehensive and in depth look at every system and circuit needed to make a Elev-8 copter. I will admit it is not for people that are not somewhat familiar with engineering or technically inclined. I admit that I have a degree in engineering, but I knew nothing about RC planes and quadcopters. After reading this one book, I am comfortable talking about them with people that have built them and fly them. I will be ordering my Parallax copter next month...it looks like a new design is in the works :)

This very technical, and will be useful for people who got some back ground knowledge on programming micro controllers. General hobby people may or may not find this book very useful.

Great book! It is written by an Engineer so it probably goes a little deeper than most people want but the author explores some really cool options if the desire is there to mount a camera for FPV flying, GPS auto piloting, etc.

I completely misunderstood the purpose of this book. I thought it was how to physically BUILD a quad not program it from scratch. I'm not saying it is not a good book to read if you are an aeronautical engineer with advanced programming skills, but it is not for ME. I have done programming my whole life but not this advanced. I will see if I can return it or wait until I advance my programming skills. I give it generously two stars because it was not adequately described.

I bought this book almost by accident - I was looking for play activities for adults - but it's become a favorite resource for group activities. Its geared to kids and great for kids, it's just as good for adults.A couple quick things:Many of the games are easy to play and easy to explain. There aren't lots of complex rules.You can adapt the games to your space and group size very easily as well.Most of the games are quick and easy to play but you can adjust them so you can play longer or do multiple rounds.I know it is entitled "camp games" but I've used them in weekday youth groups, adults seminars and even workplace settings. They get people up and moving and talking and laughing.

I bought this book to find activity ideas I might adapt for (adult) leadership training programs as well as games for kids. It did not disappoint. The authors offer a wide variety of engaging activities and explain them all clearly. I have been able to adapt a few for adults. My daughter is soon off to be an RA at a summer sleep-away camp for kids 8-12, and she is taking the book with her.

I'm a program director for a week-long youth camp each summer, and this is one of the best resources I have for large group games. Number of players and equipment needed are listed first for each game, and the games are sorted into categories from "take it easy" to "run them ragged."

Lots of fun ideas for camp games. A bit young for the age group I was specifically looking to entertain, but the ideas are adaptable and, hey, fun is fun.

Love this book. Games are classified according to level of activity and number of participants. It includes games for around the campfire, night games, water games, large and small group games. Great resource for our American Heritage Girls Troop. We will be using it for years to come.

Bought this book for my 4 kids to play at home with each other or with their friends at our homeschool group. It is a huge hit with unique games they loved. They played with it all day the day I gave to them and can't wait to play the games you need more people to play.

These games are better then the ones I learned in biyscouts, and you can keep your clothes on.

My daughter was applying for a camp counselor position and was told part of the interview would be to demonstrate a camp game. She used one of the games from this book and the director really liked it. She must have made a good impression because she got the job!

This is the only practical book I've come across. Face it, you need this one. Every other book references this book.While attempting to model the Meredith effect for an aircraft installation I ordered three books. This one, Heat Exchanger Design Handbook by Kuppan and one that never arrived. Working thru the first example in appendix B and a lot of reading in the book and on the internet and I was able to create what I believe is a good model for my application. I have been unable to duplicate a few of the numbers in the example such as the specific volume v2 they have. It may be rounding errors. Also the efficiency vs Ntu graph is so small it is almost unusable. I ended up curve fitting what I could and created an empirical function. The StPr^(2/3) graph is hard to read as well. I ended up using functions for Nu and backing into it. There is also a lot of fussing around with unit conversions that I don't normally deal with. It would be nice if it had decent tables for glycol solutions. But that was another internet scavenger hunt.I wouldn't bother with Kuppan's book. The theory section is probably better, but I didn't see any useful example problems. I didn't spend a lot of time with Kuppan after reading Kays.

The essential handbook for heat exchanger design. It doesn't have everything, but it has over 50 years of solid design experience. Take some time to read through everything and add book marks: you'll come back to this reference constantly.

As a chemical engineer I've had limited use for this book. Kays addresses an area of heat exchangers used in aerospace, semi-conductors and other industries where small coolers or heaters are needed. I remember first hearing about this book back in the early 80's, while living in California, so it has been in print for a while; the first printing was 1955.Although the author addresses many of the issues of design there is only a half-hearted attempt at examples. Kays speaks to the PhD level not the working engineer. I was hoping for a book more like Kern's "Process Heat Transfer," or even Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot's "Transport Phenomena."Here's a good example, on page 45, "Procedures for Sizing a Heat Exchanger." Instead of taking the reader through the bloody details as Kern would do, the author refers us back to Figure 2-12, a block-flow diagram giving the reader a vague understanding of the steps involving sizing an exchanger. In the end, in fact, on the same page, the author finishes with: " The complete design of a heat exchanger involves a whole set of considerations, as indicated by Fig. 2-12." This is clearly a cop-out.I had a similiar experience with plate and frame heat exchangers where so much of the sizing information is now proprietary. This forced me to go back to chemical engineering articles written in the 50's when this technology (also a compact heat exchanger) was new. When people are trying to sell an idea they are usually more open; I picked up some dandy sizing equations.All in all, this book will be useful. But, it won't help you size compact heat exchangers to the degree of detail necessary to actually build one. It will merely allow the reader a glimmer of understanding of these marvelous inventions while making him/her a slave to proprietary information from some vendor.If this review was helpful, please add your vote.

Most texts spend only a chapter or two on heat exchanger design and performance. This book really dives into the details. You'll need a pretty good knowledge of the subject matter to begin with in order to fully comprehend the topics. This book contains tons of experimental data that can be used to predict heat exchanger performance.The book has several examples and is easy to follow. A great resource for anyone involved in the development of heat exchanger models. I particularly use this for hvac design and find it works well.

The text is a little old but great for practical applications. Many correlations have been presented for various heat exchanger configurations.

This book will never go out of style. It is chock-full of relevant information on extended heat exchanger surfaces that can be used for design and also for verification of numerical models. I highly recommend it.

I’m a beginner on the Guitar and I can’t read music so I look for easy Tab Books. When I say easy Tab I mean the complete melody with string numbering for fret and string to be played. Some books state easy tab but aren’t. In any case this one is and most of Hal Leonard books if they state Tab are tabbed. I’ve got about six months of Guitar practice time (3 or more hours /day) and I’m in my late sixties, so let’s face it I’m likely slower than some on the learning curve. At my current skill level I like to see the minor chords mixed in that this book has, it makes the song sound better and offers a bit more challenge. Of the 100 songs there are about 25 I like, and 15 that I feel are done well. The others I’m not familiar with, or just don’t care for. So over all I’m happy with my purchase and if you like the older country music song it’s very likely you will find enough song within this book that you will be satisfied too. I recommend for beginners that practice 5 or more days a week with at least 3 months or more practice.

I think this is a good collection, but many songs go over more than two pages, so it is hard to sing along by just looking at it. That was the concern I had before ordering it and it turned out to be true. This can't be helped because songs are long and the book has TAB scores to allow a detailed study of the songs. It is a good collection and people will appreciate this songbook.

This book has plenty of classic country songs. It wasn't the easiest to follow but I am just starting to learn guitar on my own (self taught). It is not the most basic for beginners.Decent selection of music though.

A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking is about modern physics for general readers. Its aim is not just listing some topics, but introducing modern physics by examining current scientific answers, although not complete, to fundamental questions like: Where did we come from? Why is the universe the way it is? Was there the beginning of time? Is there an ultimate theory that can explain everything? We don't have such a theory yet. I have read the first edition when I was a high school student around 1990, and this book is the revised version (revised in 1998). Compared to the first version, there are little changes. But there is one noticeable change in his point of view on the ultimate theory. According to him, recent findings on "dualities" seem to indicate that it would not be able to express an ultimate theory in a single fundamental formation. Instead, we may have to apply different theories to different situations, but in the areas which they overlap, they must coincide. The book has a lot of merits. Firstly, non-native English users including myself would feel comfortable and find it easy to read. He doesn't use difficult words and his writing style is clear. In the sense, he is better than other English scientific authors like R. Penrose, J. Gleick and I. Stewart. Secondly, the level of the book is well-chosen for general readers and the total page number is just less than 200 pages. If they read the book, at least, they would be able to learn more about how the universe began, how the stars have been formed, and how we have come here as the result of the evolution of the universe. More than that, the book contains interesting stories of some Nobel Prize winners in physics with their results related to the mentioned fundamental questions. This will help readers understand the 20th century's progress in physics. Thirdly, among the physicists who have contributed in searching an ultimate theory, the author himself is distinguished. He showed that a black hole radiates light, so we can say that a black hole is not completely black. Up to the time he presented this theory, everyone believed that a black hole can only absorb everything around it, but radiates nothing. To find the ultimate theory, we have to consolidate general relativity and quantum mechanics, but the two theories are inconsistent in many cases. But Hawking skillfully applied both of them to black holes, and obtained the result. The physicist, L. Smolin regards his finding as a starting point toward the ultimate theory. That we can read a book where Hawking himself explains about his theory for general readers is thrilling. As I mentioned above, this is my second reading of the book. When I first read the book as a high school student, it was impressive for him to explain that at the beginning of the universe, there was a singularity where the energy density is infinite, and so the law of physics including general relativity, cannot hold. But at the second reading, I found out that what Hawking really wanted to say was not that we cannot know the beginning of the universe, but that we need another theory that can explain the beginning by considering both general relativity and quantum mechanics. Actually, in the book, he introduces his "no boundary" theory which explains it without the singularity. But this theory has been neither verified nor disproved by experiments until now. Here is my advice for a reader. Don't think that you have to understand every word and sentence. Less than 200 pages, the book contains a lot of things and the author does his best in explaining them easily. For example, its explanation about the history from the beginning of the universe to the first living things on earth is outstanding. And about time travel, its arguments are ever clear and reasonable for me. But, in a few parts, the explanations are just sketchy, so if a reader is not already an expert, he could not fully understand them. When you meet such parts, just move forward. The most important thing is to learn some things and enjoy the reading.

I believe that "A Brief History of Time" was the late Stephen Hawking's first book for the general reader. I can see why it was a best seller worldwide because Stephen was a very entertaining and humorous writer. His explanations of concepts in Astrophysics that I had found inexplicable were a lot clearer by the time I finished reading "A Brief History of Time."I would recommend that a person read the last edition of the book because it best reflects the current thinking in Astrophysics. The man who was Stephen Hawking genuinely surprised me. I'm seventy-three and rarely get surprised by much anymore. But in Stephen Hawking the writer I found a kindred spirit and a remarkable human being. Having finally made his acquaintance through his writing, I felt that I had been touched by genius.

I read this book with my oldest son (13 almost 14 years old) and enjoyed it even more than when I first read it in the 90s. Stephen Hawking is a brilliant writer. His knowledge of his field (theoretical physics) is vast, deep, and emotional. His ability to distill complex ideas into accessable analogies rivals Richard Rhodes (who brilliantly describes Mad Cow Disease in Deadly Feasts and the atom bomb in Atomic Bomb), whom I consider to be the best in class for this ability. I had no appreciation for Dr. Hawkings' skill when I first read this book - probably because I skimmed it. :-)This time around, my son and I read a chapter a day and discussed it, first with each other then including my husband, the resident Big Brain. Talk about rewarding! My experience with reading this book with my son has been so positive that we are looking forward to reading the Feynman Lectures together, this time with my husband, this fall. Who knows, I might become an accidental physicist. LOL

If you want to know how the world and the universe works then this book is certainly the one to read. From Quantum Mechanics, providing key sight into extremely small particles and matter that makes up the universe, to relativity (general and special) which describes how space and time works is what this book is all about. What I liked most was Hawking's writing style where he inserts both humour where required (he opens with the Turtle challenge by a member of the audience) as well as plain and easy language to explain concepts about complex topics. Whilst the detail went a little over my head it was nice to go through and pick out areas that made sense. Then again I was able to read a GetAbstract summary on this book and get more out of it. It really depends on what you want to learn and how much.Three key takeaways from the book:1. An expanding universe does not preclude a creator, but it does place limits on when he might have carried out his job!2. The universe is expanding by between 5 - 10% every thousand million years.3. The police make use of the Doppler effect to measure the speed of cars by measuring the wavelength of pulses of radio waves reflected off them.

Hawking's book is the most understandable description of the physics of time and matter that I've encountered. Not a text book on physics - it's an explanation of classical relativity and quantum mechanics for laymen that focuses on the origin and future of the universe. It describes what scientists have discovered so far and how their thinking has changed over time, and then discusses the possible futures that seem to be implied.Relativity and quantum mechanics are not easy subjects, but this book is as good as it gets for those who want to learn a bit about them without becoming an expert.
