Basically only for those living in Australia. I wish I had known before I bought the book.
If you have credit cards that are out of control, or a housing loan that is crippling you, then this book may help you. However, if you are able to pay off your credit card balance every month, and basically never or rarely pay interest. Or if your housing loan is under control and you have budgeted to pay extra every month then there isn't much in this book that you probably don't already know! While reading this book, I was waiting to find the gems that people seem to think are in there, but, for me at least, there was nothing to see.I take my hat off to Scott for creating a plan that has helped a lot of people, but we control our finances and have never considered our expenses to be out of control in any way. I found the book mildly interesting at most, and many of his suggestions were either a confirmation of something I also believe or are nothing more than a "duh" moment (stating what I thought was the bleeding obvious, obviously not obvious to some).If you feel your finances are under control, you won't get anything from this book, so I suggest you keep looking. If you are drowning in debt, this may throw you a lifeline, but you MUST change your financial habits, if you don't, his suggestions will do nothing for you. As they say "you have to WANT to change".
Excellent guide to financial freedom. I would recommend this book to everyone no matter how old they are. It is easy to read and I found myself laughing out loud at times. I would have loved to have read this as a teenager but having read this in my mid fifties, the impact is still significant. I have lost count of the number of people i have recommended it to.
Good common sense advice in this book that is relevant to Australian situations. Definitely worth a read. I learned what some investment terms mean and feel less daunted about taking the big leap into the stock market as a beginner. The pitfalls of ongoing debt, especially that which banks try to encourage you to stay in through things like investment loans and credit cards, was a real revelation. I like the fact that it is independent and tries to empower you to take responsibility first and foremost. After reading this book I began to question the motives of some financial advisors who try to sell you products to their advantage through trailing commissions etc. Educate yourself and be more informed and self -reliant about money first. This book is a good start for beginners and those wanting to get a handle on their money and debt.
The only motivational and finance book you'll ever need. Buy it and recommend it/lend it to friends and family. You probably already do a couple of things but you will learn so much and gain a different perspective. Don't just read it, do it, follow the steps wherever you are in life, no matter your income. Also a very funny read (once you're past the sad part at the beginning).
After reading The Barefoot Investor I immediately purchased 3 more copies as gifts for my young adult children. Much of what I read in the book aligned with the common sense approach to money management that I have lived (I am now 60), however the author's easy to follow and fun approach via a series of explicit steps is something I am sure my kids will enjoy following. Not to mention, hearing from an expert closer to their age is likely to get more traction than sage advice from their father.The book is an easy and entertaining read. The occasional testimonials throughout the book underline the practical results that can come from following the steps, although there is a small risk that to some readers these might be a little annoying. If so, then just skip over them. Ultimately, what an individual gets out of the book will come down to their willingness to follow the low risk approach that will eventually result in financial independence.This is a must read for anyone that desires financial independence, whether you are just starting out or heading towards the end of your working life. Even if you are highly financially literate, I am sure there will be something positive that you will take from this book.
Say no more. I read tonnes of books and rarely leave reviews, but this is too important. If you are in Australia it will be extra helpful. If not, apply the same principles. They will work wherever you are. Congrats Scott.
An interesting, informative and entertaining book about how to successfully manage money long-term. I wish I'd read it years ago! I've already suggested my sons read it-although, as we live in New Zealand, some of the tips are not necessarily applicable.
