I really enjoyed this book and finished it within a couple days! Libby, the protagonist, is quite the character and I really like her personality. She is very easy to relate to and could be the girl next door. I love her sarcasm and laughed to myself quite a few times throughout the book because of the quirky things she says. That being said, I couldn't imagine being in her shoes and having the day that she has when she discovers two devastating pieces of news within a matter of hours. Libby has already had a lot of grief in her life and yet she can't seem to escape it herself. To me, it seems like she vacillates between being in denial and being optimistic that her health issue doesn't exist. I was so glad that she meets Shiloh who understands possibly more than anyone what she's going through. He helps her to figure out that she needs to fight for her life and be there for those who love her. I love how the story ends because Libby gets an ending that she never thought she would. I felt this story was sweet at times, along with funny and heartfelt. It deals with some serious subjects that would make anyone fall into despair and yet Libby remains optimistic and I couldn't help but cheer her on. I'm glad I picked this book for my Kindle First novel this month and I highly recommend reading this!
Have you ever started to read a book, and from the first few pages you could tell it was going to hook you? That was this book for me. I chose it as my October early-release freebie through Prime. The same day I ordered this, I downloaded about 4 other books through my public library. I was going to read a few pages from each book and see which grabbed my attention. I started with this book and just kept reading. It was well written and well edited. Witty humor was interjected throughout, and while centered around a deep subject, the book was light and yes, maybe a bit fluffy. I felt that the main characters were well developed and part of what kept me hooked was that I cared about Libby and wanted to see what happened to her. I appreciate that this was a "clean" book - no swearing, no explicit sex scenes, but I would have liked Libby's first love scene to have been slightly more detailed. At only a sentence or two long, at first I wasn't sure if it was something that had actually happened.I disagree with what one reviewer said about everything being neatly tied up in a bow at the end. Not everything with Libby was tied up at the end of the book -which I found surprisingly unpredictable. Yes, there was a happy ending of course - and I would not have wanted it any other way.(Getting an early release copy through Prime is in no way tied to a promise of writing a review.)
I gave this book three stars because I thought the writing was good, the medical speak was believable, I found myself curious enough about the story to read the whole thing, and I really liked a few of the characters.I could not give the book more than 3 stars for one major reason. The main character is just not likable. We have to be reminded several times that she used to be an unwavering optimist, and all sunshine and unicorns, but we don't see any of that part of her personality here. In fact, what we see is a woman who is selfish, spiteful, and lies to her loved ones over and over again. Sure, she's had a couple of terrible recent shocks and a rough childhood, and certainly most people would have reason to react badly at first, but she continues this behavior throughout the book. To me, the way she treated her husband was absolutely unforgivable. I had a hard time understanding why the supporting characters in this book coddled her and loved her so much and let her get away with how she was acting. She seems to blame everything in her life on either her husband or an incident that happened to her in childhood, which although very sad, is a poor excuse for behavior at 35 years of age. Also the Epilogue was ... well let me just say that I had to put the book down and say "Oh give me a break."As I said, I liked the story in general, and clearly the author can make characters likable, as she did with a couple of the supporting characters. However, I think it could, and should, have been written in a way that would help the readers feel some empathy for her, and sadly that is not the case in my opinion.
Libby Miller has been living in a bubble of contentment, protected by her family, her marriage and her natural optimism. Then, suddenly, the bubble is shattered by two pieces of devastating and life-forever-altering news she gets within hours of each other. Her initial reaction is bitterness and fury. In crisis mode, she impulsively makes a few major decisions and then flees to Vieques, an island in Puerto Rico that had been a favorite place of her desperately-missed mother. Libby's mother had died of cancer at age 34, about the same age Libby is when we meet her, and Libby and her twin brother Paul are still suffering the loss. The first quarter or so of the book is written at a frantic pace, as Libby reels from too much bad news after so long avoiding facing unpleasantness. But then, very gradually, she comes to terms with it all. Pagan creates memorable characters who come to Libby's aid. Although the issues facing Libby are about as serious as it gets, the book is lightly written. Libby's gradual acceptance of her new reality rings true.Perhaps the people around Libby are a bit unrealistically tender, wise and supportive, but I didn't care. The short novel is very well-written and zips along pleasantly. This book is a major departure from my usual reading material that I got as my Amazon Prime October First choice, and I read it in a single day. I left it feeling braver at coping with my own difficulties and more certain of my worth to my loved ones, and that's a very nice gift indeed.
