Carolyn Brown really knows how to draw you in. In The Magnolia Inn Jolene is holding onto her past. Her mother was an alcoholic and drug addict. Her last boyfriend also had a drinking problem along with cleaning out all her accounts. She is having a hard time getting beyond this.Then she inherits half of her aunt and uncles bed and breakfast. The other half went to her cousin, Reuben, whom she has no good feelings for. He has no intentions of running the inn with her and sells his half to Tucker.Tucker is also holding onto his past. He was married to the love of his life until two years ago when she died in a car accident. He cannot let go of her. He moves his home that is his trailer to the back of the inn property and plans to stay there. He has enough money to renovate the inn. Jolene has all of $100. in her checking account. They make a deal and she will work alongside of him and also prepare their meals.Jolene is happy with this deal and they work well together. Yet Tucker cannot got over losing his wife and gets falling down drunk one night. The next day he is handed an ultimatum. He knows it is for his own good. Slowly over time they are each able to move on. Working so closely together they become aware of each other. Long buried feelings begin to surface. Can Tucker and Jolene run the inn and be together with a happy ever after? You will have to read the book to find out if and how they get there. I loved every minute of this book and was sorry for it to end.

I love Carolyn Brown but this book seems like several other of her books.I live in East Texas ,and people are really not so much down home,andHick sounding. I will re-read some of her other books and save my money.

While Carolyn Brown is one of my favorite authors, this book really disappointed me. The two main characters were "flat and one dimensional." I felt no chemistry between them. When I compare one of her books like "Cowboy boots for Christmas" to this one, its like it was written by another author. It was a boring book.

Magnolia Inn has been a bed and breakfast for many years. Proprietors Sugar and Jasper decided they needed to retire so they gave half of it to their niece Jolene and the other half to their nephew Reuben. They bought a new RV and left to travel the states.Jolene wanted to remodel the inn but Reuben sold his half to a man named Tucker.After working together for a while Tucker and Jolene become friends but he was a drinker which Jolene hated since her mother was an alcoholic. IA great story of loss,finding new love and changing lives. I love Carolyn Brown's books.

If you ever read any of her books, then you already know that Carolyn Brown really knows how to draw her readers into her stories right from the very beginning. Her characters are usually very feisty, meddle-some, and somewhat quirky. But most of all they are so dang lovable.

Story was too predictable and I didn’t like any of the characters.

Another easy, quick, don’t want to put it down book. After reading several drama/mystery/who dun it books, this was a breath of fresh air.It’s a story that probably would fit into anyone’s life....so realistic, true, filled with different emotions, and love. “Look At Us” by Vince Gill is mentioned and it fits so well with the story and at least with my life.Highly recommend this for a “feel good”, down home Texas story.

I'm having my first daughter in a few months, so I've been reading some books. This had a lot of good reviews, seemed fun, so I took a chance. There's really nothing of value here. The author is incredibly hacky and very repetitive (OK, we get it. You love baseball, Sportscenter, meat, and hate the Cubs. We know. You've told us every single chapter.) There's a very weird chapter (#12) about threatening a child with breaking his bones because his daughter has a crush, things like that. It has a very "Duuuuhhhh, every guy is a dopey dad from every single commercial duuhhh" vibe to it. Women are smarter than men and his wife hates sex with him. We get it. The amount of times he 'brags' about having an HDTV in 2013 is also kinda weird. Doesn't everyone by now pretty much? He also mentions suicide multiple times just because his daughter might like ballet. C'mon already. I say pass on it. You won't get a nugget of wisdom at the end of each chapter like I thought. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because I'm sure some people will get some use out of it, but honestly it's not very good. I usually don't write negative reviews, but the amount of times I found myself rolling my eyes each chapter (basically every time he mentions 'bacon' over and over again) prompted me to do it.

Sure this is a funny, tongue in cheek book about fatherhood. But it's ridiculously stupid. Tons of outdated cliches and sports metaphors with little substance. The bulk of the book is about stereotypical girl things (pink, Disney, dora the explorer, tea parties) and complaints about girls' lack of sports ability. I got this for my husband when I was pregnant and I just feel bad for getting such a useless book. Does my 3 y.o. daughter like Disney? Yes. Does she like soccer? Yes. The final chapter is heartfelt but with a ring of girls are an ok option if you can't have a boy. Skip this one. There are better funny, heartfelt books out there. But I'm just a girl, so what do I know?

I received the book today and I'm about halfway through. Definitely a good read for a first time dad to a daughter. She will be my first child and I was expecting a boy but a baby girl will do just fine. Definitely recommend this book so far.

Good book to have a laugh. Not sure the title is correct about being a guide to raising girls. It’s mostly something to read for entertainment. Once the girls roll into your house you probably won’t be picking this up for advice.

This book is absolutely hilarious - I laughed out loud practically the entire time I was reading it, frequently running to the other room to share with my wife. I highly recommend it as a companion to any more serious expectant dad book. You can learn a little from this book, but mostly it's about the laughs.

I've long been a fan of Klems' blogs, and have followed his journey into fatherhood of three girls with great...admiration (and a little terror). A great gift book, but also a nice reminder that parenting doesn't have to be all hard work and no fun. Laugh out loud funny and poignant. Couldn't put it down.

After reading the book, I've come to the sober conclusion that the law doesn't seem to favor the ordinary person who is simply trying to defend themselves. In order to prevail, it would seem that each person needs to have a law degree from Harvard, and the ability to slow down time in the event of lethal force situation. This is the case because the legal system, chops up your deadly force encounter, which is measured in seconds, into an esoteric academic exercise where the actions of the parties are scrutinized at the the nano-second level. One can almost imagine a panel of ancient philosophers, psychologists, and scholars evaluating who is in the right and who is in the wrong at any given fraction of a second in the timeline of events. In our system of justice, such reflection is done by the police, the DA's office, your defense attorney, and a jury of your peers -- folks who know nothing about the law.The author presents a very sobering view of how the legal system works for those who choose to defend themselves in a violent encounter. Yes, you may have killed the bad guy, and you may feel that you are right, but if the legal system choses to pursue your actions, you will have two outcomes; the price tag of your legal defense and your freedom, or, 20 years to life in prison. On several occasions, while reading, I thought that death or serious bodily injury might actually be a good option given the real possibility of jail for the rest of my life, a fate that might be assigned by a gun hostile jury or some real error I made in the deadly encounter.For all of those folks with high capacity magazines, heed this warning. Every single shot you fire in self-defense will be evaualted by the DA. As the author pointed out, there was a case where a subject fired 6 shots. Three were deemed self-defense, while the last 3 were considered attempted murder. The defender was convicted on the 3 "bad" shots and got a life sentence plus 90 years. So, a magazine with 20 rounds is a joke. If you shoot 20 rounds in a self defense case, you are in for a world of trouble with the justice system.Lastly, know your state laws. The author goes to great length to compare differences in state law for self-defense. Infact, the last third of this book, is a comprehensive digest of every state law for a meriad of serif-defense issues.This book is a must read for all gun owners.The purpose of this book, in my opinion, is to form a proper mental attitude for a self-defense situation. This book really makes you think about the "un-locks" you might have in order to draw a weapon and use it.

I purchased this book after seeing a positive review on a discussion forum from another forum member who took a live course with Andrew.I found it easy to read, entertaining and informative. I am a lawyer (but no experience with this area of law at all since law school years ago), and think it is well-suited to the general reader, as well as to lawyers or others more familiar with legal concepts and approaches - the author doesn't over-simplfy conplex concepts, but also makes the subject matter easily approachable.I also very much appreciate that the author maintains a website with up-to-date law revisions and new case law, as well as providing commentary on recent news stories / reports of defensive (or, regrettably, not) firearms use.There were a few instances of material / concepts that were substantially repeated only a paragraph or two away from previous, similar instances (*not* in the chapter summaries that are provided after each chapter) that a better job of editing might have addressed, but that did not, IMHO, detract from the overall value of the information presented or the style in which it was presented and explained.I think this book is an incredibly valuable resource for anyone who owns a firearm that might be used in a self-defense situation, and without hesitation would recommend it to the responsible firearm owner.

I didn't know what to expect; but, I must say, I am very impressed with this book.It is impossible to write a book that is thorough and explicit on the laws of concealed carry in all jurisdictions. That said, this book does a very fine job of approaching this task with the ever present caveat that laws in all jurisdictions are fluid things. The bulk of the book explores fundamental legal principles involved in deadly force applications, along with case law discussions applicable to specific historic instances in which deadly force was used.I honestly did not expect that this book would be so captivating. It is well written, in an informal language, that makes it very easy to comprehend and very difficult to put down once one has begun reading it.

For years, I have been reading references to Claude Shannon because of his involvement in so many critical developments in science, communications, Bell Labs, and even the stock market. About his sense of humor or his riding a unicycle through Bell Labs – while juggling (a favorite hobby). And about his groundbreaking, earth-shaking realization that all communication, from voice to music to documents to photos – is all data and could be treated the same way. Without this insight, I could not post this review today. But there was no way to get my fill of Claude Shannon – no biographies or documentaries of an American genius who lived until 2001! A Mind At Play begins to fill this yawning gap (and it seems a documentary is finally in the works as well).Shannon was a natural. He simply did. Whatever caught his eye. He invented machines all his life, designed them, machined them, theorized their optimization, and cleared the air on numerous topics that concerned them. His great gift to us was his reductionism. He could look at a problem and strip away the redundancies, the tangents, the superfluities – and the noise. Especially the noise. The bare core that was left was now addressable and solvable. With that, he could add back the other factors as needed. It made his solutions elegant. This clarity of vision is dispiritingly rare. That a man of his many other abilities had it has benefitted the world disproportionately.He was in it for the intellectual challenge. While other scientists won Nobel Prizes, fame, fortune, privilege and rank, Shannon shunned the limelight and kept working (and playing). “Down to Earth” doesn’t begin to describe him. His toy room served him to the end. He hated speeches, and preferred playing the clarinet (or chess) to lecturing. This was in no way a stock-standard scientist. His brilliance was evident to everyone throughout his long life. And he worked with all of the most brilliant.My favorite story in the book is when his young daughter brought out a package of toothpicks and dropped them all over the wood plank floor. Rather than scold her or instruct her to clean it right up, Shannon observed: ”You know, you could calculate the value of pi from that.” I also liked the index finger he installed in the basement toy room. When his wife wanted him to come upstairs, she pulled the cord in the kitchen and the finger curled upward. This man makes for a fascinating biography.Among his great discoveries was how to eliminate noise. Noise in the transmission of data corrupts it, making the message incomplete, wrong or unintelligible. Shannon broke down elements to their smallest, and assigned them numeric labels. If you gave (say) a letter a two digit equivalent, you would get a wrong letter if one of the digits was blurred by noise. By giving them longer strings of digits, they could tolerate noise and still be correct at the receiving end. This sort of outside the box thinking revolutionized countless industries.We owe Claude Shannon a lot, and Soni & Goodman’s book takes a big first step in paying that debt.David Wineberg

This is a book worth reading, my sense is it captures the essense of Claude Shannon's life and achievements. More importantly it does so whilst respecting his innate humble nature.I read Shannon's paper in my youth on information theory, it had a profound impact then and now. It still stands as a paper that changed my perception of what communication is. This book gives you insight into his life and his works - I recommend it.

A superb biography of a genius. It covers his entire history from his technical peaks to his tragic end in Alzheimer's disease. Wish it would have been possible that his personally imagined funeral could have been celebrated. The documentation of his life is deep and includes many photographs. The flow is perfectly paced and detailed. Enjoyed his lecture attended by Einstein in pursuit of tea and cookies at Princeton.If you ever puzzled through A Mathematical Theory of Communications it is a treat to see the man behind it's genius.Thank you Jimmy Soni and Robert Goodman for your great work!

One of my critiques of the technology industry is that there's not a rich body of work around the intellectual history of the space. This is starting to change, and this book by Soni and Goodman is an important addition. Shannon's a fascinating character and his personality comes through with various episodes, many concerning his family. Those are glimpses into his life that we've never had before, in fact, my general awareness of Shannon has transformed into specific knowledge - and it's compelling reading.The book seamlessly tells two stories - that of Shannon's work and of Shannon's life. There are obviously tradeoffs - this is not a technical treatise nor pure storytelling. It is a meticulously researched mix and it's a better book for that combination.The authors do us a service in taking both the man and his family as seriously as his work, I think. There's a lot to learn from his contributions to information theory. These areas are covered in a manner that makes it easy to consume. There's a lot to learn from his life. These areas are delivered in a manner that makes it easy to relate.

For the most part, I have not been a big fan of Barron's . I've used them in the past for mathematics, chem, and SAT study, and it was no good for anything, so i ended up tossing them in the trash and going with better books.For some reason, these guys got the PTCE (PTCB) test down pat. not sure what they did differently, except they seem to be more thorough and careful about what is needed, and what is not needed for the pharmacy tech.

I credit this book as being the single best thing I did in preparation for the PTCB! If you study this book and know it ...... and familiarize yourself with a few areas NOT in this book, those being the Clark Rule, Young's Rule, and Flow Rate math (as in an IV - for example, how many drops per minute in a given amount of time)...... you will be VERY prepared for the PTCB! I passed the PTCB on the first try! Good luck!! :)

Helped me pass my exam! I am very happy that I ordered this book to help me study, it is the only one I bought and it was worth it. It includes a pretest and two in-book practice tests to help you gauge where you're at and what you need to work on, along with an online practice test and little quizzes at the end of each chapter to make sure you learned the important things. This was well worth the money!

I would definitely recommend this book along with the PTCB pocket prep app. This book has all the needed information minus a few things without excess information. I studied this book for 3 weeks, took notes and highlighted. I passed my test on 5/25/2018.

I am a retired Pharmacist and have decided to go back to work after 4 years away from Pharmacy. I am in a different state and decided it was easier to become a pharmacy technician. This book was all I needed to review for and pass the PTCE! Very comprehensive and well organized with good sample tests including one online. I highly recommend this guide.

Didn't have any pharmacy background, so I originally thought to study for the PTCE exam over the summer, but stupidly procrastinated till the day before my exam. I crammed for 7 hours using only this book, and managed to pass the exam with a 1457. The practice exams in this book are exactly on point. Excellent coverage of all the domains. This book was clearly written by someone who knows exactly what they're doing. I wholeheartedly endorse this book.Just some advice for anyone studying - don't worry so much about memorizing all the top 200 drugs. I can't disclose any information about the test, but my recommendation is to learn the other clerical and safety information down to the tee. That helped me pass way more than spending my time memorizing the drugs, probably by a ratio of 15:1.I've used Barron's before for AP exam stuff, but this book definitely takes the cake for being concise, yet incredibly thorough. It's a must buy for any autodidacts out there.

Not as indepth as the PTCE is. Actual text books would work better unless you are a seasoned technician brushing up for the exam.

This is an excellent study guide for the PTCE!! Especially when reviewing for Pharmacology and Pharmacy Law. I highly recommend making flashcards when reading through this book. The practice exams are extremely helpful as well. This book helped me pass the exam on my first try!! 🤗

The book was organized well and well written. I passed the PTCB with a 1528 but I don’t credit this book. The practice tests in this book are nothing like the exam and most of the questions on the exam I did not see the corresponding material in this book. I would suggest buying the $29 PTCB official practice test and studying the material asked in the test. The questions and concepts were similar to the practice exam and reworded on the actual exam. I also recommend PTCB Pocket Prep for a math review but the questions in pocket prep are a lot more difficult than what is on the actual exam. I wouldn’t recommend this book for the PTCB.
