From School Library Journal

Gr 3–5—How do animals build their homes? The answer is revealed in its grand and impressive variety through a number of well-illustrated foldout pages and lift-the-flap features that show animal homes above ground, below ground, underwater, and even in human homes and farmyard barns. The colorful images are clearly labeled and the descriptive text will enhance readers' knowledge. For example, the section on animals that dig their homes in the ground shows meerkats, prairie dogs, gopher tortoises, and naked mole rats above ground; when the flap showing an animal is lifted, readers see that animal's burrow underneath. This is followed by a four-page foldout showing the inside of a rabbit warren. The generous volume of detail will help kids understand the author's reference to animals as "building geniuses." VERDICT A delight to browse through and even better for a close-up examination, this book is an excellent choice for nonfiction library collections and for classroom units on animals. It is also a useful mentor text for showing how information can be presented by successfully combining words and illustration.—Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York

Review

"There are fun facts and lifting flaps galore in this lively compendium, with entire pages that unfold to reveal a bunny warren and a beehive, the many animals living in one tree and the wonders of a coral reef. Paired with Tim Hutchinson’s illuminating illustrations are brief discussions of everything from a naked mole rat’s burrow to the nearly five-foot wide nest of a European white stork. Readers also learn about some extreme builders, like two orb spiders who traveled to the International Space Station. This nicely laid out book will engage a variety of ages and interests." One of my grand daughter's favorite books. We never get tired of flipping open the pages and seeing all the animal life illustrated on each page. Informative and interactive.

Readers are enjoying the book.

Cool book! Love!

Every page of this one is packed full of interesting information and guarantees to suck in information hungry, animal loving kids for hours.Every animal needs a home, and the variety is almost as vast as the imagination. While some animals keep it simple, others are genuine architects with a touch of genius. From birds, to mice, and even underwater creatures, this book covers a vast array of examples from the animal kingdom and is sure to hold a surprise or two.The second this book is open, it's clear that the reader is in for a treat. Not only are animals from every corner of the globe, even lesser known ones, mentioned in these pages, but each home is presented through colorful illustrations with many secret doors, which lead to even more interesting tidbits. Not only is it exciting to see what animals and homes are up next, but the various possibilities to open up some homes to large scale, while peeking in the holes of other corners and crannies, makes it a delight to visit again and again. With all of its fun, this isn't a book for the youngest readers but more suiting ages six and up. The text, while whimsically placed and holding a vocabulary great for the age group, is something for a larger attention span. This isn't a book a reader can devour in one sitting. At least, not while absorbing all of the information. There's simply too much for that. This is the kind of book readers will visit time and again to discover new information or notice things they skimmed past before. And the information is interesting—even for adults. There are enough less known facts to guarantee that something new is to be found for almost every reader. This is a book of pure discovery and the sheer enjoyment of finding more, and is sure to draw kids back into the pages again and again. My kids loved this one and discovered all sorts of things in our own backyard. So it's a definite 5-star read in my book.I received a complimentary copy and found it to be such a good book that I had to share my honest thoughts.

Fantastic book for helping upper elementary and middle school students to better understand the animals around them. Showing them the different ways that animals can build. Towns, lodges, dams, burrows and more. Even Spiders in Space!Fold out pages and lift the flap elements make this an interactive book to help in knowledge retention.Missing much in the way of reptiles, and insects.

I never would have thought to tie together animals and engineering in a picture book, but Lonely Planet Kids has done just that and it is fascinating. HOW ANIMALS BUILD looks at all kinds of animals from bunnies and beavers to bees and birds and a huge variation of construction. The book is full of details, flaps, and information. For a kid who loves to ask why and has an interest in animals and/or tinkering, this is a must have nonfiction book to have on your shelf.Thank you Lonely Planet Kids for the copy in exchange for my honest review.

I bought this as a gift for a friend whose son is Autistic. She and her son were very pleased. She says he loves it.

Review

Reading his new book, one appreciates that Tom Lombardo is an unsung hero whom the world desperately needs to hear from. His contribution demands a global audience in an age of increasing complexity and mega crisis... This work is innovative and extremely creative. When one would have thought all has been said that needs to be said or thought about wisdom, Dr. Lombardo brings us to the edge of our seats in excitement, passion, love and the desire to self improve with clarity and efficacy, with our eyes looking forward in future consciousness... This is a must read for all human beings irrespective of race, nationality, class, gender and position. (Stephen Awoyemi, Miriam Rothschild Scholar, University of Cambridge, UK, 2013-2014 President, Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Africa Section Nigeria)Tom Lombardo is probably the single most impressive thinker, philosopher and author I have met in recent times. His unique perspective about wisdom and future consciousness, his eye for what matters in life and his depth of knowledge and experience make this book a must-have for those concerned about the collective future evolution of human society. (Kiko Suarez, Vice President, Lumina Foundation)"Tom Lombardo's [book] is a masterpiece of creating a deep understanding of the continuum of society's evolution at the same time that it sets the stage for the ongoing transformation of human consciousness that is needed for the sustainability of humanity during this shift from an Industrial Age to an Ecological Civilization. His book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand how to re-conceptualize the future" (Rick Smyre, President, Center for Communities of the Future)Tom Lombardo's [new book] is a most important book in all sorts of ways. His major point is correct: “The central question we ponder and debate within ourselves and among ourselves, across the years and through the decades of our existence on the earth” is “How do we create a good future?” He is also right to indicate that in our past history “conflicting answers and philosophies of life addressing this question have been created, offered, marketed, and frequently even forced upon human populations across the world.” Finally, his answer to how we create a good future is spot on: “by developing a core set of character virtues, most notably and centrally wisdom.” In making his case for his arguments, Lombardo displays an impressive understanding of not only psychology and futurology (his specialties), but also of global intellectual history, and he does so in a readable prose which avoids any academic jargon. This book deserves a wide readership and appreciation. (Walter Moss, Professor Emeritus of History Eastern Michigan University Author of “An Age of Progress?”)

How do we create a good future? This is the question Thomas Lombardo answers in his new book Future Consciousness: The Path to Purposeful Evolution. Lombardo defines a good future as “flourishing in the flow of evolution” and suggests this is accomplished by heightening future consciousness through the development of core character virtues especially the virtue of wisdom. He writes wisdom unites knowledge and ethics. Wisdom is the application of knowledge for the future good. Future consciousness is a set of psychological capacities that include foresight, anticipatory hope and fear, planning, goal setting and purposeful behavior. He observes the psychology of the future needs to anchor the future of psychology; and the future of psychology needs to be anchored in the future of the cosmos. The first nine chapters of the book (Part 1) sets context and provides a discussion of the evolution of human consciousness and virtue-ethics through time. He underscores the importance of self-control and self-responsibility and the role will power plays in dynamic exchange between and among determinism, freedom, reciprocity, stability, change, social ecology, technology and the environment. In Part II of the book (Chapters 10-18) Dr. Lombardo takes a deep dive into the main psychological processes of the human mind. He summarizes contemporary research and explores how emotion, motivation, purposeful behavior, learning -memory-habit, consciousness and understanding, thinking and imagination, as well as creativity supports the growth and development of the self in service of wisdom and an ideal future personal narrative. He suggests the answer to creating the future lies within and is supported by attention to the development of a personal autobiographical narrative. Key virtues to be included in one’s personal narrative include self-responsibility, self-reflection, love of learning and thinking, creativity, self-growth, hope, deep purpose, and expansion of cosmic consciousness and its relationship to differing perspectives on time.In other words, what the future holds for you depends on what you hold for the future. If I were approaching this book for the first time, I would read Chapters 17 –The Self and the Personal Narrative and Chapter 18 Wisdom first and then launch into the first chapters. Developing future consciousness with yourself in mind helps illuminate the wisdom work that is needed on one’s own path to purposeful evolution.

Dr. Lombardo has created an essential masterwork in the field of consciousness studies. He draws on his long experience in the field of futures studies; he is the retired Faculty Chair of Psychology, Philosophy and the Future at Rio Salado College and has been active in the Communities of the Future network. Future Consciousness: The Path to Purposeful Evolution is framed by a seemingly simple question- How do we create a good future? This question, I would argue, is the first philosophical question any person has to wrestle with as a human being and perhaps the last one.Dr. Lombardo divides the book into two sections, Part I set’s the foundation of the theory for the reader and Part II delves into the applied. He covers 18 chapters about as briskly as one can and considering the book is nearly 800 pages, I never found a redundancy or too wordy of a concept. In fact, each sentence is beautifully written. For me, a published author https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-World-that-Doesnt-Exist/dp/1785354515 and futurist, I have always been uncomfortable with the thought that I was a futurist, never have I wanted to be thought of someone not living in the here and now. Dr. Lombardo has gone a long way in helping me to get over my apprehension of being a futurist, he defines his notion of the future as “the future is ongoing reality, whatever it will be, from now forward in time.” He goes on to say he doesn’t mean future as a point in time, “the future continues and continues and continues from the present.” Yes!In my work, I approach the future from the context that as society fly’s forward into complexity that is faster paced, interconnected and interdependent – people and leaders especially, will need new capacities to engage uncertainty and these capacities include a consciousness encompassing both mind and soul. The techniques and wisdom necessary for humanity to make the leap into the future and survive will require new ways of thinking. A good future is only possible if enough inhabitants of the world allow themselves to become the best possible version of themselves…which is as Dr. Lombardo characterizes it “purposeful evolution”.The truth of the Kosmos is, for many of us who contemplate such things, that all of reality is an unfolding (unravelling?) toward greater truth and complexity and in this unwinding there is a direction, a literal spirit in action, it is the single greatest truth we can know. This movement toward ever more complexity is the act of creation and as Dr. Lombardo writes “it is ongoing infinitely in a kind of cosmic directionality.”The final chapter is titled “Wisdom” and there is an all-encompassing paragraph, I will quote in full.“The conscious self creates and evolves itself as the coordinator of consciousness and human life through an ongoing, future directional, self-reflective story telling process, generating a relatively dynamic personal narrative of past and future, real and ideal. The self creates purpose, identify, and meaning in life through the personal narrative set within the context of a grand narrative it tells itself about humanity, the world, and the universe. Transforming our life, consciousness, and self-identity involves transforming and evolving our ideal future personal narrative and our ideal future grand narrative, and pulling the two more clearly, strongly, and self-consciously together. “This thought is significant, because each of us, Dr. Lombardo contends, are compelled to be our own creators of the universe through the development of our consciousness and is illustrated by our own personal narrative. We develop a future consciousness by cultivating character virtues that incorporate both Eastern and Western traditions – we wake up to our spiritual capacities and grow up into our psychological potential. So…how do we create a good future? We allow ourselves to flow with evolution and engage with all living things in a kind of interactive dance between nature and our mind - sensitive to emergence, eager to share and shine by recognizing the beauty of interdependence. “We are moving” Teilhard de Chardin wrote and the emphasis in on “we”…indeed. Enjoy this book.

I am on page 182.I really like this book. A lot of things must have come together in Mr. Lombardo's mind for it to have been written.I had a big insight as to teleology (p79) as I was reading. That's the point of such a book. To help us understand our world.Very readable, even though I don't agree with all of the viewpoints expressed. The writer has surely "done his homework."

Dr. Lombardo describes consciousness as an evolutionary phenomenon that humans my direct holistically with wisdom by developing a set of core character virtues. It's a deeply philosophical book with a prescription. A must read for any futurist.
