I got this book to supplement a research paper I was writing on the shift in female sexuality from the colonial period to post-revolution. It was extremely helpful and I learned a lot from reading this. This completely elevated my paper, so I highly recommend for research. I also recommend just for the interesting read that it was.

Dayton's book argues that, in terms of courtroom cases, women in colonial Connecticut fared better under Puritan legal ideas than later when the laws became more like those in England. She takes the reader through five kinds of cases that involved women to show the changes in the law over time. Her style is easy to read, and she uses anecdotes about specific cases to illustrate her points. A very unique study, unlike any that I have encountered in colonial American history.

As a military historian with a Masters in Military History, it's not often that I find a book that I simply can't put down. Most books get a good professional look-see and filed for reference. Not so Jim Stejskal's book on the Berlin Det-A.This is not only a remarkable book, but an important book. Very little has been written about the ETO operations of the Special Forces during the Cold War. Most of the SoF literature that covers the period has been written about the MACV/SOG operations in Vietnam and in other conflicts... and most has been written from a first-person perspective (more on that below.). This book documents some of the untold and most incredible aspects of the Cold War as fought in Europe including revelations about the use of "Backpack" nukes and of the U.S. Army Special Forces operations behind 'enemy' lines in Cold War East Berlin and East Germany. . If, in fact, you liked Jonathan House's book "A Military History of the Cold War" or Eric Haney's "Inside Delta Force" then this is also must-reading.One of the best aspects of this book is that it was written by a serious and professional military historian... who was also a part of the unit through two tours of duty. Yet unlike a lot of the 'I was there' tell-all books about Special Operations forces, this is not a personal aggrandizement or a "look at me" type of read. This is a very in-depth and incredibly well-researched unit history that follows the Berlin Det-A teams from their inception int he 1950's through the dismantling of the unit after the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Though the author was there and was a key member of the unit through some of the most interesting and tense moments of the Cold War, not once in this broader unit history does he mention his own role. Instead, this is a book documenting an un-heralded and unique unit of the U.S. Army Special Forces. It also gives a fantastic look into the culture of West Berlin from, for lack of a better term, a 'worm's eye view.'Last, and possibly among the most intriguing elements of this book, are the detailed revelations of the Berlin unit's involvement in Operation Eagle Claw, the attempt to rescue the American Hostages from Iran. Though several 'first person' narratives of this operation have been well-received (including Charlie Beckwith's "Delta Force" and Haney's book mentioned above) this is the first book that reveals some of the un-heralded activities of the operators who were on the ground in Tehran preparing to meet the Delta and Ranger rescuers who never made it past Desert One. It details the pre-rescue surveillance carried out by Dick Meadows and also documents an largely-forgotten aspect of the raid, which was the complication of how to rescue Americans held at the Chancellery building in Tehran, separate from other hostages.Without a doubt, this is a book that should be on the shelf of any serious student of Special Operations. It is also very readable and completely engaging. A must-read.

There are several excellent first-person accounts of episodes in Special Forces creation, development, and operations that we hold as important to our history. This work is not one of those. It is much more comprehensive. In Special Forces Berlin, Stejskal takes us through two generations of Green Berets clandestinely planning and executing missions in a unique environment during the Cold War, a period covering more than half of Special Forces existence. The power of the work is in Stejskal’s approach. He takes us from the post-WW II Cold War world environment to the creation of Special Forces and the secret Berlin detachment. Throughout the era, he explains the episodes in the Cold War, the situation at each time in Berlin, and then the work of our units to adapt to their environment and to conduct those difficult missions. The best example of that is the Berlin participation in the Tehran hostage rescue. Jim pulls no punches. He discusses mistakes and weaknesses along with the successes. The takeaway is the ability of a small Special Forces unit, under cover, to evolve, adapt, and continue to march until the enemy collapsed before them and they withdrew leaving no hint that they were there. Read it. Ignore the back-cover photos of ‘Styk’ morphing into Sam Elliot. It’s a publisher’s trick.

Finally, James Stejskal with his book “Special Forces Berlin: Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army’s Elite, 1956-1990” gives this unit the historical treatment and tribute it deserves. This organization has left its mark on the evolution of modern Special Forces and its Unconventional Warfare mission. DET-A was a small unit stationed in Berlin, Germany for 34-years, during the height of the Cold War to conduct sensitive activities. This unit specialized in unconventional warfare, counter-terrorism and direct action using low-visibility techniques of tradecraft (plain clothes undercover operations) and high-end state-of-the-art equipment like their testing of the feasibility of employing Special Atomic Demolition Munitions (aka backpack nukes) before the mainstream establishment of Green Light teams. DET-A also revolutionized counter-terrorism techniques later adopted by Blue Light a Special Forces stopgap counter terrorist unit that was disbanded after the establishment of the 1st SFOD-D (aka Delta Force). This book outlines all this plus much more, and although this book does not divulge any classified information (rightly so) it is still very revealing. It is comforting to know this capability lives on in the modern Special Forces maintaining that direct linage to the WWII Office of Stratgic Services (OSS) and DET-A respectively. I will also add that besides the superb quality of the hardcover book I also purchased the Kindle version because I did not want to wait for the book to arrive in the mail. The Kindle version is excellent on my PC and smart phone with no glitches. I highly recommend this book to all SOF operators, military historians and, I think it reads very well for the layman reader as well; who will be intrigued by the exploits of these extraordinary men. As a 28-years active duty SF operator I give this book five stars!

Abrams is a fantastic reporter who excels at earning his subjects' trust. This is a treasure trove of anecdotes and insider info for anyone who loved The Wire. Some knowledge of the show's events and themes is probably a prerequisite for enjoying or even understanding the book, since many of the interviews proceed from an assumption that the reader knows the show intimately. For real Wire obsessives, the most interesting contribution may come from series co-creator Ed Burns, whose reclusive nature has kept his voice hidden from most of the discourse up until this point but shows himself here unafraid to barbecue a few of the show's sacred cows.

I just stumbled onto this book, but when I did, I had to read it. The Wire was my favorite show for years, and the kind of deep dive offered here was very valuable. Virtually the entire cast and a lot of crew provide an extensive oral history of the Wire, and I tore through it really quickly.Quite often you come across articles and books that describe a creative work through the perspective of a writer, or a number of actors. The approach here is more broad-based, focusing on the look of the show, and it's relationship to the Baltimore community, as well as the up-front talent.Any fan of the Wire,or anyone interested in how great TV is made, often despite the studios and networks, will find something of interest here.

overall, the book is entertaining. Fans of the wire will enjoy the stories, particularly the off the set camaraderie among the cast. I would have liked to have seen more balanced reporting; the author leaned too much on Andre Royo, Michael K. Williams, and Wendell Pierce to name a few. Little from Wood Harris and other characters critical to show's intrigue. Author chose curious points of focus. Example, dedicates more time/analysis to the character Snoop than any other character. Snoop's a fine character but curious to dedicate that much ink to a bit character.I'd recommend this with reservations that enthusiastic Wire fans temper expectations.

Excellent behind the scenes look at the best show ever on television. Lots of contributions from all the major cast members (who are still with us) as well as insight on the driving forces behind the show. Highly recommended for Wire enthusiasts.

I got into the television show, The Wire, late like many viewers. I had been reading all the press and finally decided to catch up on the first three seasons prior to season four, widely considered to be the best of the series, in 2007. It was ground breaking in its realism, season long story arcs and the overall theme of the futility of institutions such as police, the government, schools, and the press. Jonathan Abrams has produced a book, All The Pieces Matter: The Inside Story Of The Wire, in which he interviews cast and crew about the ground breaking former HBO series, whose popularity seems to increase as each year passes. Obviously, this is a book for fans of the show. The are some interesting anecdotes and insights into how the show was made and obstacles they faced to get five seasons for an HBO series with a low viewer audience. I enjoyed the look back at my favorite TV series of all-time.

This was, indeed, exactly what I wanted from a book about The Wire. Interesting little stories from the people involved in the show; a sense of what it took to get the show going, and to continue in the face of an ongoing threat of cancellation; how everyone felt about the characters; and what everyone hoped to accomplish. Also, I really like the oral history format. And now I must watch the show again.

What a marvelous look at the actors and creators of the best project ever to be aired on television. This show will be watched by generations of individuals. The idea that it took a long time to be recognized and appreciated by television audiences is really not surprising. Most people are raised to watch idiotic shows with canned laughter and moronic scripts. When they finally watch something like "The Wire" their brain is in shock.This show will live forever. There will always be a West Baltimore somewhere with a myriad of stories to be told.BRAVO.

This book is AMAZING. If you loved The Wire, this is a must read. The author literally talked to everyone associated with the show (writers, actors, etc) and painted a great behind-the-scenes picture of The Wire.I didn't get into TW until after it was over, so it was crazy interesting to hear their struggles as they filmed.I don't wanna give stuff away, so I'll keep it short and non-spoiler(ey).Essentially, the book breaks down the show by Seasons--starting at 1 and progressing until the end (Season 5).TL;DR - Read this book. Game respect Game.

I'm using this book for my intro to CS class, which is still in progress. I find this book well organized, informative, fun, high quality and interesting. I would absolutely recommend it.One thing you should know about this book is that it is not an introduction to programming. It is an introduction to the topics of computer science and the main theme is centered around algorithims. You won't be learning anything too complicated here, but it will be a broad introduction that no programming book/class could compete with.

Extremely illustrative with great colors. Very organized. It was for my first CompSci course, was easy to read. When read from start to finish, you really begin to understand how your knowledge is compounded form earlier chapters. The book starts at the 'low-level' of computing and progresses to the 'higher-levels' of computing. Simply said, low-level can be binary operations and such that the computer's internals take care of, and high-level refers to concepts that humans can think about and handle.

I am extremely pleased with this item. I was hesitant about buying a “used” book without seeing it first but the book arrived in pristine condition.

Honestly, I don’t understand the textbook and I don’t know how could I pass the class without understanding. I felt like learning a foreign language. It is maybe useful for those who have the computer baseline which I don’t.

A really good CS foundation book. I was not a fan of how some of the concepts in the book were covered but to each their own. Most people will be buying this as a class text so they won't have a choice but to use it. With that said, despite my opinion on the poor coverage of a few of the concepts, overall the book is very informative and engaging and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good foundations book.

The authors approach the subject in a disciplined, orderly manner. Each chapter builds on the last one and the explanations are clear.

I read this book knowing very little about computer science. This book did an excellent job of explaining complicated concepts to the layman, from the way a computer works in binary code, to high level programming, to the internet. Highly recommended for beginners

I used this book for my CS208 at Regis University, this book builds a great introduction to Computer Science Topics. I would definitely recommended to anyone who wants to grasp a solid understanding of what Computer Science is about.
