I borrowed this book from our local library when I first read it and fell in love that I had to own a copy. I had never heard of Gladys Taber before but I'm hooked it is just too bad the books are all out of print and so hard to come by. She lived locally so it was very interesting to hear the stories of places that were local for me, even if you aren't from the area it is still a good book. It is not a single story from front to cover but each chapter is a month and within each are reflections from the time of year, the seasonal changes, the challenges, the local happenings and people. It was very enjoyable and much of what she wrote about 50 years ago could have been written today, it is really timeless. I liked it so much that I searched for more of her books and have enjoyed each additional just as much.

This book makes a great introduction to the Stillmeadow series and the work of Gladys Taber. At turns charming, uplifting, moving, funny, wistful, thoughtful, and educational, this is just a great book to cuddle up with on slow afternoon with a cup of tea and an hour or two to spare. You'll want to read it in one sitting but I highly recommend taking it a chapter at a time to savor in small doses. A wonderful book.

To be able to live on a quiet country Connecticut Road, with lots of dogs and cats, family near by, great food and neighbors dropping by. It sounds a bit like a a "Thrush Green" story by Miss Read, but it's the real life of author Gladys Taber. Ms. Taber kept journals of her life she had in an antique cape house, built about 1670 or so, for years. Her books are filled with stories about dog shows with Cocker Spaniels, adventures with recalcitrant old stoves, lots of recipes, friends stopping by for good food and conversation, family and grandchildren overflowing the little house. This book is a month by month observation, for a year, of life at Stillmeadow and her clear understanding of the natural world around her. She appreciated very bird, bush and tree, and even record snow falls held a special charm for her. If you are looking for a place where life is a bit slower, folks stop in to say hello, I recommend you visit Stillmeadow.

This is an old book but the images, emotions and shared experiences are timeless. It is like sitting across the table from the author and just listening to her day. You will find a friend within these pages, and an occasional recipe! In my daydreams, I live at Stillmeadow! I hear the stillness of snow cover and the music of the spring birds. I have been reading and re-reading this book for many years. As an aside, I recently read it aloud to an Alzheimer's patient who listened attentively for long periods of time. She was taken away from her present pain and brought to a beautiful place of peace. It is truly an amazing book.

I love this book and it arrived and condition has posted.

A couple of weeks ago I was searching for a different kind of thesaurus recommended by Tina, a cousin-writer. I put the book in the shopping cart and spotted a Descriptionary. The price was right and my interests piqued so I bought that one as well - you can never have too many books. When the two books arrived I knew they were different immediately - all six-pounds worth. The Descriptionary has everything indexed so that it is easy to find. Each main title has smaller sections that cover almost anything you could imagine. The first main title is Animals and Insects, then under that there are sections like Animal Groups and Insects and Spiders; under those there are even smaller sections. It has been so much fun to read that I stay up later at night to read, just like a regular dictionary. Here are some of the main titles:Architecture, Art, Clothing and Fashion, Electronics, Environment, Finance, Food and Drink, Furniture, Human Body and Mind, Language, Law, Magic and the Occult, Medicine, Military, Music, Occupations, Performing Arts and Broadcasting, Religions, Science, Sports, Tools, Transportation, Weapons and lastly, Words and Expressions You Should Know.For example, under the main title of Military there are several sections, one of those is Air Force and Aircraft. Under that it lists things that pertain to that like "aeromedical evacuation - The transport of patients to and between hospital facilities by air" and "dumb bomb - any unguided bomb."The book is 711-pages long and at every turn you will find something to interest you. I love this book.

This is an excellent resource to find words in specific themed categories. There are a lot of words and different categories. It has saved my life several times whilst writing. It doesn't have everything, nor does it give an extensive description of the words, it's just enough to help you find things you are thinking for but can't remember the name or something similar. It's a great book overall. ​

This is a wonderful concise synopses of the "great" books. The prose is easy to read and understand... if it piques your interest, you can find the book. It is very helpful when someone refers to one of the books (gives and example of a character, etc) and you have enough knowledge about the book to understand what he/she is talking about. It makes you look very smart!! (and well-read)

This is an intelligent, thrilling way to grasp the essence of all kinds of books I've heard about but never had the chance to read. Thanks to this book, I've already bought several of these books and have enjoyed them immensely. I'd like to see a sequel to tise book with 100 different titles that there wasn't enough room to include in this terrific volume. Then I'll read many new books that I've always wanted to read---and this book by Mr. Campbell gives me the excitement needed to pursue the new books.

I love literature and teach it to homeschool high school students. This book is so helpful!January 2013 Update: I have now read all the books on the list. The tools in the book are great, but some of the books on the list are definitely not appropriate for homeschool students! I would pick and chose. While they would all be considered classics, I think it has TOO much Hemingway and Faulkner. It is very heavy on American authors. Some of the books are also just weird (If you are going to do Goethe, Siddhartha is a better choice than Steppenwolf), but most are wonderful!

Have not finished reading yet, but so far entretaining and enjoyable for short time reading.

Just as I read in reviews can not wait to cozy up with it.

A great summary of great books.

Really helps a ludite like me get a quick overview of the books I should have read in grammar school, high school and college instead of reading the comic book version. I highly recommend this book.
